Dead: A Short Story

Dead. They were dead. The news of death travels fast here, but I’ve never seen it celebrated with joy. Even though my friends are happy about it, I can’t help wonder ‘what about Jo-jo, her parents died what about her?’ Jo-jo doesn’t talk to anyone, trust me I’ve tried so many times. All she does is look ahead. I know why though, she’s afraid of something. I just don’t know what. I was joyful today though, it’s the day of her parents funeral. I know it sounds messed up, but Jo-jo will be coming with us after. I’m picking her up from the cemetery.
I see people in yellow everywhere, dancing, singing, and laughing. All had smiles on their face. Even the priest looked happy. In the front of the newly dug grass was Jo-jo. Her knee length white hair

It’s time to come live with us now.” She had no emotion in her eyes or face. She nodded once and walked to her old home, the ground keeper's house. She walked in as I stood at the doorstep waiting, She came out with one small bag. She looked at me and nodded, telling me she was ready to go. I nod back showing her I understood. We walked together to my car.
It’s been two weeks since Jo-jo got here, she hardly eats and still hasn’t talked, she just sits in her room looking out the window or reading. I go in there sometimes and just read next to her or just talk to her for a couple hours a day. Tonight there's going to be a big storm, when I told Jo-jo about it her entire body stiffened. I was listening to the rain and thunder tapping my roof and window as I’m going to sleep that night, when I heard my door open. I roll over to see Jo-jo standing in my doorway holding her blanket to her body as well as a piece of paper.
“Jo-jo, what are you doing here?” Jo-jo responds by handing me the paper in her

Quilt filled my chest dragging it down. I close my eyes feeling a tear. She started coughing. “Josiah, listen to me.” she was hardly whispering, “Find two stones. Bring them to me when you do. Hurry. Please.” I turned around to find two stones. After finding two, I brought them to her. She took them in her small hand and started talking in the language I didn’t know. The inside of her hand started glowing, as it faded she opened her hand. She grabbed my hand and placed one of the stones in it, holding it felt like fire. But I was numb, I didn’t care. She held the other one to the sky, the stone trickled into nothing. She smiled and looked at me. “Keep that stone close to you at all times. Leave me here and go. If you're in trouble whisper my name into it. I will came.” I shook my head. I couldn’t leave her. “Go Josiah I’ll be fine. I will know when you're in trouble, you will know when I’m in trouble. Go live you life, be happy. I will do the same. I stood up slowly. I didn’t feel in control. I walked away with a stone of fire and a heavy

Communicating Change Like all koans, “The Stone Mind” koan can have many meanings, and is not meant to be completely solved. To me, this koan reminds us to see the moment for what it really is. When occupied in arguable semantics, opportunities can go unnoticed or just slip away. When needless bickering occurs, important projects are often delayed. Being present in the moment gives the situation respectful attention and allows for accurate decisions.…

Throughout the ages, we have seen that a symbol in literature can suggest more than its average run of the mill meaning. In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” she uses several different symbols for their realistic and symbolic meanings. On the realistic level, each symbol sets as a part and that has its own place in the story but represents a hidden thought or idea upon closer inspection. She uses symbolism for these items in the story to create a sense of foreshadowing and to create some flashbacks, so we can better understand the tradition behind “The Lottery”. These items to provide that sense are the stones, the worn out black box, and the dreaded black dot.…

When reading and studying the Upanishads I recognized the shifting influence that the principles of the text has had upon me through my experience of time. Specifically in the Katha Upanishad, Natchiketa’s interactions gave me insight into my own with Yama, Lord of death. I can recall standing at my Cha Cha Nancy’s home where my great-grandmother rested quietly. Her paper thin skin was withered like the sides of a wind shaped mountain and she lay with her eyes closed, arms crossed, on a hospice bed with bars for me to climb on and inch closer. This transition of life I could not comprehend, and the pain that it brought to those I loved was engraved into my thought processes.…
