Juan Carlos De la Vega’s style as a follower can be characterized as an Alienated Follower. De la Vega seems to have experienced a setback, because he is unclear of his roles after an entire year with the company. Not only is De la Vega unsure of his roles, he also feels a promise has been broken. He was led to believe his position would appreciate and nurture his vision of the future for security systems. Given the article, there is no clear indication if De la Vega is currently functioning as an effective follower, as there are no noted point of views from the board members, CEO, nor the employees of Alvon Biometrics. There are several tactics that may improve his relationship with Bussard. First, he can become a resource to Bussard. If De la Vega takes the time to understand the vision and goals of Alvon Biometrics, then, informing his leader of how he feels would be better received since his ideas and beliefs would be in line with the company. Finding an open slot on the CEO’s calendar and discussing this could have been an effective way to carry out this communication. Second, he should build an authentic relationship with Bussard. It seems fairly easy for Bussard to dismiss his request to speak about the responsibilities as a COO. If this authentic relationship is formed, not only will Bussard see the benefits of having a COO, but there will be a mutual respect for one another. Finally, De la Vega should start viewing Bussard realistically. With everything coming at his CEO, and him not having much responsibility, he should realize Bussard must be extremely overworked. The initial reason for hiring a COO was to relieve him of day-to-day operations of being both a CEO and COO, tasks that were too much for one person. With these three tactics, De la Vega could improve his relationship with Bussard
