After a long day of teaching sometimes I stand in the middle of the classroom, hands on hips, and take deep breaths as I wonder about what just happened today. Did a tornado hit? One would assume so with the pencils and papers spread across the floor. As I walk around trying to pick up the scraps and make the room presentable for janitor,I notice little pieces of papers with scribble notes appearing through the wrinkles of the paper. As a teacher, creating spaces can be tricky. Over the course of this year, I started thinking about de-centering writing units to only focus on qualities of writing and genre specifics, to encouraging a shift centering units on the purpose and the writer's relationship during the writing process might be a way to foster a safe space for students to explore their power of their personal story, while creating a bridge of understanding among our students who are facing challenges in their world. Georgia Heard said writing can, “...help our students open their eyes to the beauty if the the earth, restore a belief in the power of language, and help them begin to understand the truths inside of them.” Many times these histories remain hidden for years before surfacing. Can students afford to wait to “right” open to feel safe enough write from their “truth?” What exactly is a safe classroom space? A safe classroom can be place in which disagreements can take place and a student's truth can be spoken.
