October 2, 2002, is the start of a series of murders that authorities had a difficult time explaining. At 5:20 p.m. the first shot of many over the course of several days was fired through a window at a Michaels Craft Store in Aspen Hill. In a little over an hour later, at 6:30 p.m., James Martin, who was a 55-year-old program analyst at NOAA, was fatally shot and killed in the Shoppers Food Warehouse grocery store parking lot in Glenmont. The next morning on October 3, within two hours four more people were shot in Aspen Hill and other nearby areas in Montgomery County. Muhammad was raised by his aunt in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after his mother died when he was four years old.
After he graduated from high school, Muhammed married Carol Kaglear. During the same period of time he joined the Louisiana National Guard. Together they had a son that they named Lindbergh. During Muhammed’s time in the military, many of his commanding officers described him as personable and outgoing by one of his commanders. In the early 1980s, he got in trouble twice; once for failing to report for duty and the other time for hitting an officer.
In 1985, Muhammed changed his way of life. He divorced his wife, converted to Islam, and joined the US Army. During his time in the Army, he was stationed in Washington where he met his second wife Mildred Green. Together they started a family with three children. Muhammad became a skilled marksman while serving in Germany and the Middle East during the Gulf War. In 1999, his second wife Mildred filed for divorce.
