One day each year, students of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Central Florida invite children with disabilities and their families to participate in Let’s Ignite at Memory Mall on April 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

DPT students are hosting the event for children, ages from 5 to 21, with physical and developmental issues.

“My students, oh my goodness, they spend months planning [for the event]," said Jennifer Tucker, a member of the physical therapy program. "They get the community’s support and financial support. Overall, they do a phenomenal job making sure everything is ready. It is a fun and safe event for everybody."

“After the actual event, there is a medal ceremony and each kid gets a medal. [Last year] I was a blubbering mess. They deserved that medal and every one of their smiles made my day. As DPT students and future professionals, we saw the need [in our community] and wanted to give back,” Toubman said.

Toubman as well as Clayton Stocker, sophomore DPT student, are helping coordinate the event.

“I try not to put expectations. I just want it to be an event that families are happy about and excited for. I want parents to see their children having a lot of fun and feel good about that,” Stocker said.

Stocker emphasized that this event is not only helpful for children, but family members also get a break. Each child is paired with a DPT student so busy parents can sit back and relax while their children keep active.

“To promote health and wellness is the purpose of the event. Not only are we giving a fun day, but are showing how you can adapt active games into their home life, by going outside or being active,” Toubman

I have been volunteering with the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama (SBA) for five years. I first decided to begin working with this association because working with children who have disabilities has always held a special place in my heart. Working with the SBA has helped me make a difference in my community and bring awareness to the disease of Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida victims have many limitations. The disease causes problems with their walking skills and most victims become confined to a wheel chair early in life.…

Over a course of a month we gathered to participate in the learning of cheers and a competition dance. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

Please let me know if you would like me to elaborate on any of the bullets: • Scott, Kate and I met to review SBAC, SAT, Grade 9 PSAT, Grade 10 PSAT, and Grade 11 PSAT/NMSQT data. This data serves as the basis for intervention planning and baseline establishment of SLOs (assuming we’re allowed to use the data as part of the SLO development process, which is still TBD). • The Tech Department met and reviewed a long list of tech-related items.…

The definitive diagnosis is through an acid fast stain of the bacteria in a lab, obtained through multiple sputum cultures and a chest x-ray showing abnormalities of the lungs. There is antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis but the bacteria is very drug resistant due to the stiff structure of the cell wall and as a result, the antibiotic course is long and sometimes dangerous due to serious side effects. The most common antibiotics used to treat TB are isoniazid and rifampicin for a minimum of six months. There are drug-resistant strains of TB known as MDR-TB and in these cases, several drugs are used at once to give treatment a better chance at success. Those who have latent TB are treated right away with one antibiotic to prevent the disease from becoming active at some point in time.…
