World War I, also known a The Great War, lasted for four years from July 28th, 1914 to November 11th, 1918. Of course, there were minor and major causes beforehand that eventually made the war more likely to happen. These causes include people’s sense of nationalism and militarism, alliance systems, and a country’s need to imperialize, or expand their colonies. Nationalistic and militaristic feelings that caused the Great War were especially shown in Europe when countries concerned over advancing their arms, the Germans who wanted to expand their army in order to part from Austria-Hungary, and in the Slavs when they strived for a Yugoslavia. Alliance systems also became more defined in causing the World War when the Central Powers, Germany, Austria, and the Ottoman Empire formed to protect each other, and the Allies, consisting of Britain, France, and Russia, created an alliance that threatened the the Central Powers, and when Russia had …show more content…
Alliances were seen as a threat to those countries not a part of one. An example of this is the secret alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary who included the Ottoman Empire afterwards and were later known as the Central Powers. Another set of an alliance were the Allied Powers, who were Great Britain, France, and Russia. As seen on the map in document 2, The Allies were seen as a threat to the Central Powers because they surrounded them. In the same document, it shows Russia’s Slavic brothers and parts of Africa to be part of the Allied Powers. The Central Powers had few friends in their army and were obviously outnumbered. Subsequently, the alliances stuck by their words and aided their allies as much as they could. In document 3, a cartoonist drew each of the countries involved in the war.
