Shay’s Rebellion
“What country before ever existed without a rebellion?” In 1786, a group led by Daniel Shay protested taxes that were raised by 100%. They protested because they were not able to pay their taxes because they we not wealthy. This caused many farmers to be thrown in jail. As a result, 1,500 farmers broke into the government arsenal and steal weapons causing the local militia to kill 4 of the farmers. Although many people think shay and his followers are rebels, nevertheless they are freedom fighters instead because they argued for no unlawful punishments, stepped up for their rights, and it is quite natural for people to protest for what they believe in.

In Document A, paragraph 4, it says that the people who have stepped up for their own or others rights were the most likely to be thrown into jail. This shows that they were freedom fighters because they fought for the rights they were promised when they came to America. These farmers also had to protest for their own good. In Document B, paragraph 2, it says “ The lower classes were unable to pay taxes, even though they owned property.” This means that the farmers couldn't pay the high taxes. The farmers also had to fight for the money to be used the correct way. In Document A, paragraph 3, it says “Money from taxes and fees should be set aside to pay off the foreign debt... Instead of improving our credit, our money is being used to help the rich get richer.” This means that the government taxed people not to help the country pay off the foreign debt, but to help the rich become richer.
It is extremely important to realize that at the time and still today that a rebellion is natural. “The remedy is to present them with the facts, pardon, and pacify them.”( Jefferson) In Doc C, paragraph 3, Jefferson concludes the thought that rebellion is a natural manure. This represents the idea that it is not normal, but okay for a country or civilization to have a rebellion sometimes. These farmers were the rebellion that is okay to sometimes happen.
