The Rhineland was an area west of Germany that had been demilitarized as a result of the Treaty of Versailles. The Rhineland was demilitarized because France wanted assurance that Germany would not attack them and by doing that, France was protected. Rhineland was an important area for Germany because it was an industrial area that could produce a lot of coal. When the Treaty of Versailles was signed, Hitler did not agree with the conditions because he believed that it made Germany look weak and humiliated. When Hitler started rising to power, he expressed his hatred toward the treaty. On March 7, 1936, Hitler and his troops marched into the Rhineland because he wanted to make Germany strong again.
