The Reconstruction was a time period after the Civil War when the North intended to reinforce or rebuild the economy of the South and bring back the South into the Union once again. During this time, they managed to accomplish quite a few things. For example, the 13th, 14th, and the 15th amendments were passed by Congress. While the 13th amendment abolished slavery, the 14th amendment allowed African Americans to have citizenship and have protection under the law. On top of that, the 15th amendment allowed every male to possess the right to vote despite their race or having been a slave before. These three amendments were known as the Reconstruction amendments. Even with all of these accomplishments and more, the Reconstruction ended, but who …show more content…
This organization disliked the idea of African Americans working in the government, even trying to bribe them with money. Furthermore, they threatened and assaulted a man simply because of who he voted for and that he used to be a slave. African Americans both in the North and South were seen as unfit for participating in politics and later the North and South became uninterested in the Reconstruction policies. Politicians from the North and the South became uninterested in the policies and agendas of the Reconstruction. Northerners were exhausted of events that were occurring in the South and turned their attention to Grant’s administration and other circumstances. Document C states, “Northern voters grew indifferent to events in the South.many Northern voters shifted their attention to such national concerns.Although political violence continued in the South.the tide of public opinion in the North began to turn against Reconstruction policies” (Doc.
