After the events of the Boston Marathon bombings, “findbostonbombers,” a subreddit on Reddit.com, was created. This subreddit focused on analyzing Flickr images, taken from surveillance cameras, of people standing near the finish line minutes before the bombs had exploded. In doing so, users accused multiple people of being the bomber solely on the fact that they wore a backpack or wore a backpack and had dark skin. Of the many suspects, the most famous was Sunil Tripathi. When the F.B.I. released surveillance photos of the two men they suspected to be the Boston bombers, users began to suspect that Tripathi was one of them. Tripathi was wearing a backpack and had dark skin which seemed to fit the racial profile that the Reddit users had created. The users began to raise awareness for the search for Tripathi by posted messages on the Tripathi’s family’s Facebook pages. News agencies took up the story and Tripathi’s personal information was later leaked all over the internet. Tripathi had nothing to hide, but he did have the fear of having his reputation ripped apart. Seemingly innocuous information, such as a backpack and skin color, was “analyzed” and used to constitute an accusation that had no concrete evidence. Privacy allows individuals to protect their reputation. Although individuals do not have total control over their reputation, they do have a way of protecting it from being tarnished: concealing personal information. People judge without knowing the full story and by concealing personal information, individuals can prevent unfair judgment and protect their
