Monuments have been up, built, and honored for hundreds of years now. Whether or not if it represented a significant individual during a crucial time period, or just to honor an individual’s successful for trapping lobsters (Source F), monuments have been valued for a long time. However, in recent years, many communities, and groups, have found themselves questioning the existence of a particular statute, due to it’s meaning and what it really represents. Which will lead into a follow up question. What factors should a group or agency, consider and examine, in memorializing an event or person in creating a monument. For example, in source B, you witness a statue of Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus was an explorer who sailed from Europe to North America. In many schools in the United States, we are taught to glorify Christopher Columbus because he had discovered this ‘New World’ and started everything there. However, it fails to acknowledge the terrible and horrific events that took place when this explorer reach North America. Individuals are taught and raised to be respectful, don’t judge, and respect other poeples property and or space. However, we honor, praise a man for doing the exact oppisite. Columbus sailed here on a boat, to a new land, for which individuals had already occupied, kicked them out, murdered, raped, and masacured the natives. We even gave this man a holiday in the states. So why is there a monument for an individual who represents an invader, a murderer, and rapist. The question is just not answerable because thats a monument standing for all the wrong reasons. When building and creating a monument, to remember an event, or an individual, you have to make sure that this monument want to be a constant reminder of a terrible past.
