When the Loyalists got to Quebec they were surprised because there were so many differences between the colonies. In the Thirteen Colonies, there were so many religions and they were all equal. You could donate to your church if you like, but it wasn’t mandatory. In Quebec, most people were Roman Catholic and they were favored by the government. Also, the people in Quebec had to pay ten percent of their income to the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to that, even though the colony was British they used French civil law. The Loyalists were upset by this because that means that they had to use the seigneurial system, a system where you rent land instead of owning it. Back in the Thirteen Colonies, there was the freehold system, a system where you owned your land and you can sell your land as you please. Another change was the way the government worked. When the Quebec region was split up into Upper Canada and Lower Canada their border was the Ontario River. Upper Canada started upstream from Lower Canada on the Ottawa River. Today, many people mix this up because when you look at a map Lower Canada reaches further north and looks higher up, and since it is higher it must be Upper Canada.
