According to our world history professor Miss. Wagoner, imperialism can be defined as when there is a domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country. For example, this is when a country takes over another country and forces the colonized to follow the colonizers ideas and ways of life. Back in the 1800 to early 1900 imperialism was occurring all over the world. A vast amount of countries were trying to take over lands and gain new resources. Many researchers believe that imperialism was a negative force for colonizers because of the Africans who spoke against them to protect their rights and a positive force for the colonized because they were given western education and access to modern science. In document 7 Romesh Dutt stated that they brought Western education and also modern sciences and modern life into the people they colonized lives. This benefitted the colonized because they were able to have a different perspective on how to do things. For example, they now had access to medicine which helped them heal from injuries and sickness. However, this can be negated by Document 5 because Sekou Toure wrote in 1962, “..convince us that our civilization was nothing less than savagery...Our continent possesses tremendous reserves of raw material and they, together with its potential sources of power, give it excellent conditions for industrialization…” This disproves the point on how they were spreading western education because they were not only teaching them a new way of life but removing their cultural background also this quote proves that even though they did bring medicine they also brought industrialization which was a crucial reason for medicine to begin. Once industrialization was introduced many minorities soon became injured or ill. Next, in Document 8, there is a German political cartoon drawn in the early 20th century, displaying how Africans were being killed for gold by a man of military stature with a priest standing nearby reading from the bible.
