After the Roman Empire fell, many kingdoms, small and Germanic, spread across Europe. They had different types of government, such as empires, monarchies, oligarchies, and more. Around the 8th century, a new type of government called feudalism started to pop up around Europe. It started in modern-day France and it kept growing. Eventually, it was the main form of government in medieval Europe. There were many groups in medieval society and they all had different rights and obligations. So Professor Know-It-All, feudalism was not an oppressive system that trapped people in social classes and gave them no rights or protections.

The first point is that peasants can become free. Although most of them were forced to work for a lord, or they were very poor, they could become free and live in normal society. They could become free by being freed by a nobleman, king, or emperor. But, if they didn't follow their obligations, they could never become free again. In Source #3 it states that Henry III freed a Serf because a nobleman named Richolf requested her to be free. In source #2 it also states that unfree classes could not become free anymore and they would be returned back to their Lord and severely punished if they were caught.

They owned all the land and they could grant land to someone called a Vassal in exchange for military service and financial service. They could grant the land to anyone they wanted, and the land was usually granted to a nobleman/bishop. They could also free their subjects, called Serfs.
