A walk through West Berlin: Containment of Communism After WWII , The United States made great efforts to contain communism from spreading around the world. Containment was the idea that the Soviet Union and Soviet communism should not be allowed to spread. A short passage, from a telegram that was secretly sent to U.S. State Department officials on February 22, 1946 from an American foreign service officer in Moscow makes it clear that Joseph Stalin and the Soviets believe communism is better than capitalism.…
It stood as an icon of the Truman administration to win the Cold War, regardless of the cost. The rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union grew and both sides began to rebuild their military forces with new methods and new weapons. Soon after the policy went into effect, Defense spending tripled immediately. This trend of increase continued for over forty years. America weathered the cold war because of the following war strategy:…
Personally, Eric Liu's essay has been the most thought-provoking reading we have covered so far. Similarly to Liu, I was born in America to parents from a traditional culture who were not controlling of my assimilation. When speaking of his parents, Liu states, "they didn't tell me to do anything except to be a good boy"(7). After I had begun schooling, my English began to surpass my Farsi to the point where my mother started to have trouble keeping up with me.…
Our advanced military technology shocked the Soviet Union and they backed down. Reagan’s aggression and show of military strength…
To lower taxes in the 1980’s, many programs lost a percentage of federal funding, except the military, which encountered a significant budget increase. The Reagan Administration lead a major military increase greater than Nixon, Carter, and Ford combined. This national defense increase led to an investment in numerous nuclear warheads, advanced missiles, and an anti-ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) system. This increase nearly led to an arms race with Russia, but the government in the Soviet Union knew that their economy would be unable to compete. Instead, Mikhail Gorbachev, acting Soviet leader, agreed to sign the INF (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces) Treaty, which compelled the U.S. and Russia to disassemble nuclear missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers (Druckman, 1991).…
Reagan was able to increase productivity growth in America, which although might seem like a minor effect, drastically impacted the country. Productivity growth was at 2.8% during the Carter administration, but increased quite profoundly to 4% during the Reagan era (England, 2009). Productivity increases in a country when more hours are worked and more product is produced by the workers per hour. The increase in productivity during Reagan’s presidency can likely be attributed to the decrease in income tax and addition of new jobs. As taxes decreased, there was an increased incentive for work.…
What was the Cold War and why did it happen? How did it threaten the entire world? The famous author name’s Hans Kung said: “After two world wars, the collapse of fascism, nazism, communism and colonialism and the end of the cold war, humanity has entered a new phase of its history”. In human history, the Cold War definitely changed the condition of the world.…
Every immigrant's dream is to come to the U.S. and be successful, but not all can make it, due to not being able to speak or understand English. Felix Sanchez de la Vega Guzman, Zhang Yulong, and Kim Ki Chol, all came to the U.S. with immensely different backgrounds, but they had the same goal in mind, the American dream. The author expresses that it is possible to make it in the United States without English. Throughout the article, the author explains the background on all three of the men and gives evidence to support his argument that no English is needed to be successful in America. It is clear that the author's motive is to show that immigrants can make it in America without English.…
The United States and the Soviet Union fought together as allies during World War II against the Axis Powers. Although they had fought as allies, the relationship between the two was one of much tension. For a long period of time, the United States had been wary of the Soviet communism, and had concern about the Russian leader Joseph Stalin’s bloodthirsty, tyrannical rule of his own country. In turn, the Soviets had resented the Americans for their decades-long refusal to treat the USSR as a legitimate part of the international community as well as the United States’ delayed entry into the Second World War. This delayed entry resulted in tens of millions of Russians losing their lives.…
In an effort to still American horrors the government concentrated most of it’s efforts into defending the U.S. and other countries at risk. In addition, in 1954 the Secretary of State admitted, “ If the world communism captures any American Sate, however small, a new and perilous front is established which will increase the danger to the entire free world” (Doc B). The Secretary of State suggests that to let any state fall to communism is to widen the door for the domination of communism. From this it is clear that the government prioritized the defense of the nation and it’s ability to keep communism out of the country. Similarly, this is also illustrated in chart depicting the statistical spending of the United…
1. Why does NSC 68 view the Soviet Union as different from other great powers? The NSC 68 viewed the Soviet Union as different from other great powers due to the fact that it is motivated by a specific ideology, with an aim to spread it around the world. As stated in the policy, the Soviet Union “…is animated by a new fanatic faith” (Foner 217), with that faith being communism, which stripped people of their individual freedoms.…
The United States of America was declared as a new country hundreds of years ago when the U.S. won independence from Britain. Immigration and immigrants built America. The African Americans improved the economic growth agriculturally, Asian Americans built the railroads, the Latinx community taught irrigation techniques to allow farmers improve the agriculture, and Caucasians helped improve the economy with trades. Immigrants were taking the jobs unwanted by Americans, but then they were accused of stealing the jobs of Americans. Not only that, but many citizens believe immigrants are criminals and are forced into the U.S. by their government in order to cause terrible crimes.…
I could feel my ears get warm. My face burned, I cupped my hands to try and relax my body, since it was so rigid from the words that froze me to my chair. Had my teacher really just told me I wasn't going to be able to go to college because I was an Immigrant? “ I don’t mean it in the wrong way Daisy, but to get into college that’s a really big step to do. I just don’t think you're gonna be able to afford it”, she said with seriousness.…
When asked on what makes someone truly American, the answer you usually get is freedom, patriotism, and loving the “American way”. Culture, defined by the mannerism of what a person does, cannot be condensed into a simple phrase or quality. In the past, other cultures such as the African and Native Americans were viewed as a nuisance to achieving Uniformity as an American Country, and were sought out and assimilated to try to fit in with the norm of society. This was done to ensure that cultural diversity would not become intergraded, so that the Anglo Saxon traditions would be the dominate example. To this day, cultural bias is still present, but should cultural assimilation be acceptable in this day and age.…
Although the US claimed there was no missile gap between the two, the USSR was clearly behind in the race. This was particularly fearful for the Soviet Union who did not want the US to launch a first strike from Turkey which was merely 150 miles away. The decision made by Khrushchev to build launch sites in Cuba is likely because “Khrushchev was attracted by the idea of appearing to gain greater military strength relative to US”(IBID, 168). This came from domestic issues brewing in the USSR, where it is was essential to appear strong and convince both the citizens of the Soviet Union and the rest of the world that socialism was equally if not stronger than the US and their democracy. Therefore, all weaknesses, in this case military, needed to be concealed and so the idea the USSR were now on par with the US in nuclear missiles arguably encouraged Khrushchev to continue gaining greater military strength.…
