Question 1: How long are the days in Genesis 1? Why?
Mom: I think that the days in Genesis 1 are normal, literal, 24-hour days. The entire rest of the Bible would not really make sense if they were anything other than 24-hour days. For example, the Bible mentions that on the seventh day, God rested from his creation. If, as some suppose, the days represent periods of thousands or millions of years, this would mean that God very well may still be resting. This would support a Deist worldview that God created the world and then abandoned His creation and is now idle. Records of written history coincide with this time frame as well along with Scripture. However, concerning the chronologies given throughout the Bible, the Hebrew word “father” can also be translated as “ancestor of,” so I not sure if each one of them had a direct father-son relationship. Of course, it is apparent that most of them probably did. In general, when you consider the first great civilizations in Sumer and Egypt, they only date back to about five thousand years ago. The earth is relatively young.
Brandon Roberts (friend): Again, I’m not certain, but I think it could easily be millions of years old. Recent fossil discoveries seem to verify this, and even when you consider geological discoveries such as petroleum, you must imagine how much time it must have taken for fossils to disintegrate into that natural resource. Millions of years also allows for the creative-evolutionary process God used to go into full fruition and create the vast variety of life we see here on earth today.

If this were the case, one would believe that archaeological evidence would back this and that body parts would be nearly interchangeable. However, as your mom just said, there are no “transitional species” to be found in the archaeological record between man and apes, unless you count the Java man hoax. Anatomically speaking, man’s heart (as in our cardiac muscle) is more similar to pigs that apes; one would not think this would be the case if we were so closely related. I believe God created all animals in their current form and allowed for natural deviations to account for the slight differences within kinds.
