Day To Serve Reflection

During my time at the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, I experienced a different setting in which I was given a great amount of independence and responsibility. I helped manage Day to Serve, an annual initiative, that our office coordinates on behalf of the Governor of Maryland. I worked with two other interns and we were given almost complete autonomy in overseeing this huge program. I connected with many community leaders and nonprofit, business executives to network Day to Serve with organizations across Maryland such as non-profits, faith institutions, corporations, and the Maryland public school system. We planned and hosted events in relation to Day to Serve such as press conferences, webinars, and service events. I also had …show more content…
The leadership positions and volunteer services gave me the strength, determination, compassion, and empathy to truly benefit someone else’s life, no matter if it’s one or a thousand. When I volunteered at the Cold Weather Shelter, I had the opportunity to connect with those who were less fortunate. I saw the goodness and potential in so many people, especially the children. Since I was usually the only teenager that was there regularly, the kids naturally gravitated towards me. Seeing their smiles when I made a joke or seeing them excited when we put the food out or seeing them in anticipation, bouncing on their toes when I brought games from my house to play with, filled me with such satisfaction and contentment. The knowledge that a particular moment in which I contributed to their happiness can unknowingly affect the course of their life, was inspiring. The realization that a piece of advice, a pat on the back, a tip on their homework, a hug for a greeting, and a smile on my face can create an impact on someone’s life directly or indirectly encouraged me to pursue public service. If small gestures can create a perceptible change, I can only imagine my capability when given the opportunity to help on a more profound and far-reaching

It is such an empowering feeling knowing even though my part was little it was still apart of a big plan. It is also so rewarding when seeing how truly grateful the organization is for each and every volunteer. The best benefit to me is meeting all of the extraordinary men and women who have been affected by breast cancer. Thousands of people die each year from this disease and being able to help make a difference for finding the cure is one of the best feelings. Their stories are of course heartbreaking but also admirable because they don’t give up.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

One of the most remarkable volunteer experiences that I have ever had a chance to participate in was a PULSE program held by Cooper Medical School. This premedical summer program was crucial to my understanding of human health and it afforded me with a totally new perspective on my future career as a physician: a desire to practice in an underserved area because I had a chance to witness the degree to which some citizens are in need of proper medical care and yet most of them have nowhere to go due to the lack of primary care offices in the area. PULSE program was concentrated on service learning as one of the primordial sources in understanding the community in which Cooper Medical School is located and the health trends of its residents. This information could be of much value for physicians who practice in the area because it allows…

My community benefited from my service experience because I helped provide quality care to patients that were receiving chemotherapy. I helped the nurses sanitize the chairs after each patient had left, as well as made sure the patient's needs were taken care of. If a patient was alone I sat and conversed with them. This was an incredibly enlightening experience for me because, not only did I interact with some amazing people but also got to learn what both sides of the process looks like; both from the patient's and the physician and nurse's perspective.…

Often times when we hear the word ‘service’ we think of doing something for someone other than yourself. In that moment of kindness, you may not think that your small gesture or the work you are doing for someone could have an impact on someone’s life or even the world. Throughout the text, The Work by Wes Moore, the idea of work has a much bigger meaning that states having a life that matters is important. He believes that living a life full of meaning, purpose, and service are the keys that allow you to become part of a bigger picture.…

As a high school student, I was greatly involved in service through activities such as being a junior volunteer at my local hospital and creating my own donation drive for a domestic violence shelter. My time at Boise State not only allowed me to continue to serve my community, but I also developed leadership skills and carried out projects I never thought I could be capable of. As a freshman, I helped found the Boise State chapter of Colleges against Cancer and was in charge of creating, implementing, and managing the Luminaria Ceremony at Boise State’s first Relay for Life event. The following year, not only was I director over both the Survivor and Luminaria Ceremony, but as a resident assistant for Boise State Housing, I helped my residents create a team and put on fundraisers for the event as well. Last summer, I volunteered as a counselor for both sessions of the Boise Youth Spectacular, a three-day, LDS-ran youth conference.…

Traveling through New Albany, I occasionally force myself to stop, and for a brief moment, see the community from the viewpoint of a newcomer—a picturesque town with white fences, manicured lawns, and stately buildings. As a resident, I am lucky to see beyond this viewpoint and experience everything New Albany has to offer, from the excellent schools, to the farmers market, and to its generous people. Over the years, I have become increasingly involved in various community service-oriented activities in New Albany. Within my school, I was given the opportunity to spend a few days a week after school volunteering as a tutor for two, fourth grade classrooms—without a shadow of a doubt, this was the most meaningful service I participated in. Being…

Growing up, I was always doing something to help. Whether it was cleaning the classroom with my teacher or offering to work with disabled students, it was always something that came naturally to me and fulfilled me. I had a knack for knowing when somebody needed help, and was always thrilled to oblige. In elementary school, with the help of my guidance counsellor, I created a group called “friendship circle” for girls of different backgrounds to spend time together in a judgement free environment. I organized food drives with my Girl Scout troop, and knitted hats and scarves for the homeless.…

Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
