Leviticus 16 describes the annual ritual known as Yom Kippur, or the “Day of Atonement.” The Day of Atonement was the most holy day of worship in the Hebrew calendar. Only on this one day, was the High Priest of Israel permitted to enter into the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle of God.
As prescribed by Scripture, the High Priest offered a blood sacrifice to cleanse the Tabernacle and to atone for his sins. There, the High Priest also presented the blood of sacrifice to atone for the sins of Israel.
The blood of sacrifice would be sprinkled by the High Priest over the Mercy Seat that was placed on the Ark of the Covenant. Thus, once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the sacrificial blood was applied, for the forgiveness of sin for the nation of Israel.

The first animal sacrificed represents the price paid for sin. This is known as “Penal Substitution.” The animal slaughtered symbolically represents the punishment Israel deserved for sin. God is just and holy. The “soul that sins must surely die.”

The scapegoat represents the guilt of sin being removed or “cast out.” Thus, the nation of Israel sins were atoned for and removed.
The Lord Jesus fulfilled atonement by being the “Perfect Sacrifice” and the Perfect “Scapegoat.” Jesus shed His Blood on the Cross of Calvary to pay for the penalty of our sins. His Sacrifice was once for all. He was the Perfect Sacrifice. Pure and Holy in every aspect. He is all God and all man. He accomplished what no man or animal could ever do.
