Day light saving time
“Light is the key to safety.” People may say that varying times cause confusion. For many people it’s to help minimize benefits of the sun. Despite all the benefits of DST, it is not an excellent resource of energy consumption.

In the first place, people enjoy the consumption of light. Most people love the benefits of DST. Researchers have found that DST in the 1970s on average everyday saved about 1% on energy costs. It makes sense to a lot of people that more sun at the end of the day meant less need for electricity. Supporters of DST claim that more sunlight saves lives. Another research shows an 8-11% reduction in crashes involving pedestrians

Shughart ends this article with a strong argument stating that it is ludicrous to think that daylight savings time makes an extra hour of natural light available to anyone as the sun will shine the same number of hours per day no matter where your clock’s hands point to. Some people seem to prefer having daylight savings time, while others prefer the opposition. The best option in Shughart’s opinion would be to pick one and stick to it. I find myself as a strong advocate of Shughart and his proposition of picking just one between standard time and daylight savings time. Shughart discusses how daylight savings time just results in people being less productive and the disruption of our circadian rhythms.…

Daylight savings time negative effects that are associated with it. One of these problems with daylight savings time would be the way it effects sleep, daylight savings time turns the clock back an hour which effects the total amount of sleep during the night. The lack of sleep causes more work place injuries because of the 1-hour loss of sleep. there was not just more injury's, but they were also more severe then they usually are (Barnes, Christopher., Wagner, David. 2009). The interesting part about this article is when the daylight savings time was switched back to standard time which added an hour extra to sleep, "there was no significant differences in sleep, injury quantity, or injury severity".…

The Daylight savings seems to reduce lighting use, and electricity consumption slightly, but it increases the heating, air conditioning, and gas consumption too. If the Daylight Savings were to be extended to year round, there would be an approximate 0.5% of electricity saved per day for the United States over a four-week span. This averages out to be around enough energy to power one hundred thousand houses for up to a year. From an energy saving stand point, it’s safe to say the current DST isn’t doing much of any…

This may have been more applicable in the past than it is today, however, since the savings from reduced illumination in the evening might be offset by the increased use of modern electronic equipment and the cost of heating and cooling systems. In a review of the literature on the effect of DST in energy use, researchers Aries and Newman (2008) concluded that while some studies show reductions in electricity use of approximately 0.5 to 2%, many others show no effect or an opposite effect, "particularly if gasoline consumption is accounted for." (p.14). Gasoline consumption increases with increased recreational activity when people spend a greater amount of time outdoors in extended daylight hours, while the combustion of gasoline leads to increased air pollution. Similarly, an experiment conducted in Southern Indiana by Kotchen and Grant (2011) found that "the [DST] policy costs Indiana households an average of $3.29 per year in increased electricity bills, which aggregates to approximately $9 million over the entire state . . .…

By keeping Daylight Savings Times we give our people the ability to be safe and promote a more energy efficient country. Without it we face rising energy problems and more fatal car accidents. Many people have this idea in their minds that DST somehow helps farmers, but in reality, DST actually negatively affects most farmers. Farmers have been against the system since it was first enacted because it disrupts their daily routine (Does DST...). Farmers work by the sun, not the clocks, so by setting the clocks forward an hour they have to wait an extra hour for the dew to evaporate to harvest hay. It also makes milking cows more difficult as cows are used to being milked at a certain time, and the change in time can affect both the cow and the milk. But if DST was not supported by farmers (and that’s why many believe we still use it) then is there a real reason to still keep it…
