There are numerous barriers for student parents who want to gain a university education – one of them being the struggle to make affordable alternate arrangements (day-care) for their young ones while they attend classes. Child-care is a critical resource that can be offered to the students to help relieve some of the stress of caretaking and also ease the strain of moving back and forth from the campus to home.

As a parent myself and an international student, I would like to address this issue that is faced by not only students, but also faculty and staff members who are parents. It is a challenge to make extra commitments like a group meeting/study at the library, extra time with the instructor after class, or just getting some other work done at campus. Students rush to and from class just so they can attend to their obligations as a parent. An hour spent at the Learning Centre trying to get some help may seem impossible for most of us. More student parents are likely to drop-out of university because finding for an affordable day-care in the vicinity, financial hardships and balancing family commitments with school is too much stress. The institution loses on a major population of students that can be benefited by earning a degree and securing a job for the future therefore being less diverse.
2. Not implementing the proposed plan will also lower the quality and rate of student involvement with campus related events/extra-curricular activities. Some students lose their energy, commitment and concentration even during class times and during the exam week.
3. Students’ absenteeism increases due to unavoidable family emergencies or when the child is ill which in-turn leads to lesser productivity and motivation.
