Day After Thanksgiving

Superior Essays
There is something so special about the way thanksgiving brings families together. Not always physically, but emotionally. We look back and remember every thanksgiving. The smell of fresh baked pies, smoky ham, turkey, and the mouth watering mashed potatoes. We remember family and friends laughing, smiling, playing games, and sharing embarrassing stories with one another while stuffing their faces with food. Our thanksgiving did not change this year. The smells floating in the air, the friends and families laughing endlessly, and the fall leaves creating a path in our yard. Yes, everything was normal. The day after thanksgiving left us with a memory we would keep forever.
Everyone knows after Thanksgiving appears black Friday shopping, and one thing my mom loves to do is shop. Buzzing of sales, discounts, and shoes always make her giddy with excitement. She left around five that chilly morning with a friend to go shopping for Christmas, and deciding not to go this year my sisters and I slept. My dad drives a semi, but that day he decided to stay at home a little longer to help my oldest sister, Kayleigh, bottle feed the hungry baby calves.

We always devour the foods left over once everyone leaves for the night, and nothing changed this year. Three of us on one couch, and one on another, we fit perfectly. Buried under mounds of covers and snoring lightly, all of us dreaming peacefully, until panic arose in our house.
Have you ever woke up so alarmed your heart beats faster than normal, and you wake up in a daze searching for the source of panic? That’s what happened to me. Confused and alert I looked around the living room frantically trying to find the reason for shouting. When my tired brown eyes landed on my dad trying to lightly shake my youngest sister awake, I knew something was wrong.
I have never seen so much fear and worry in my dad’s eyes until that day. He sat while holding Katlynn in his arms with her body convulsing every which way, and you could tell she was unconscious. Not understanding what was happening, I felt

He told me to grab him something to help hold back Katlynn’s tongue so she wouldn’t choke herself. That’s when I noticed the blood gushing from his finger where Katlynn must have bitten him.
My oldest sister had already called my uncle to come pick my dad and Katlynn up to take them to the hospital because they only live 3 miles away. Fear made its way into my gut as I saw silent tears rolling down her face. Hearing my uncle’s van pull up we all rushed outside in a frenzy putting my dad and my sister in the back. My other two sisters and I were told to stay back, so we did. We stood on the cold concrete sidewalk as we watched the van drive off, leaving a trail of gravel and dust behind it.
Slowly the shock faded away and the tears began to flow. We all cried for our sister, not knowing what was happening. We prayed many times hoping that she would be all right. We were informed our grandparents would coming to stay with us for the day, and my mom, who was still shopping, got contacted as soon as Katlynn was

Thanksgiving, a holiday deeply rooted in American culture, is celebrated in accordance with the applicable tradition and rituals. The school had just gone off for winter break. I was excited to be free of homework for two weeks I thought to myself. As days past I would just relax by sleeping in more than I would usually and play video games with some friends and my cousins. Then Christmas came out of nowhere and I got to see relatives that I haven't seen for in years at my grandma's house that had been decorated with big old-fashioned Christmas lights.…

As the holidays draw near, the feelings of warmth and security an individual gets when surrounded by those closest to them are noticeably fainter than they have been in previous years. It seems that as time goes on, the familial aspect of the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, has been watered down in order to make it more marketable to consumers. Also, the day itself is now practically ignored in order to make room for more profitable traditions such as Black Friday. Capitalism, commercialism, and retail together have managed to not only completely change the meaning and story behind centuries old tradition, but are now beginning to eradicate it completely, because they have replaced the important values with their own. The more time and energy…

Every year on Thanksgiving break I have gone to my grandparents house to stay for the week. For me this is important because my grandparents live a good ways away and I barely get to see them. This became a tradition when I moved away from where they live because that's when our other traditions ended like on wednesdays we used to meet somewhere and eat dinner but we can’t do that any more so we thought that Thanksgiving break is a good time to go see them because we have off school and they can get off work. The whole time we are up there we laugh cook and have fun together.…

‘Twas the day before Thanksgiving and all through the house was the buzz of excitement and anxiousness for the long night ahead. We had activities planned and they had to be done for my family to feel like our whole Thanksgiving experience was complete. An important person in all of our lives makes an appearance that night as well. Everything is held off until that person arrives, just so they do not miss anything. The festivities will last for hours because everyone enjoys this night so much that they do not want to go to bed, even when me and my siblings were little, we would stay up just as long as the adults.…

Repetitive as the questions can be, someone will always ask how you are flourishing and the answer will always be the same, “I am growing up and I’m doing very well.” Many fun games are played where the family members can compete head to head.…
