Blackmore proposes memes as selfish creatures, because they always ‘want’ things. She also gives a reason why she is proposing memes as they are live creatures. She says that, “We can say that memes are selfish and they do not care, that they want to propagate themselves and so on, when all we mean is successful memes are the ones that get copied and spread, while unsuccessful ones do not” (37). According to Dawkins meme theory, memes are selfish and careless. Here, Dawkins is proposing memes as living creatures who ‘want’ to propagate. By the word ‘want’ he wants to say that, since memes are not alive creatures, they do not actually want, but they act like they want to get copied. It seems like they ‘want’ to be successful. A successful meme is the one which gets passed on from one person to another. Dawkins also proposes memes as selfish creatures, because whether memes are useful or not they get copied from one brain to another. However, capitalism is a meme which propagates itself by elevating an idea of a moral importance of conventional wisdom. A meme of capitalism acts like it cares for a meme of conventional wisdom. Hochschild gives a definition of conventional wisdom in her article. He says that, “Home and community are primary; workspace and mall are secondary. When we go to work, it’s to put bread on the table for family” (185). Meaning, people are convincing …show more content…
Memes affect the human behavior in various ways. Some memes are harmful and others are beneficial. However, there exist certain memes which seem beneficial, but in reality they are harmful. Blackmore gives some examples to show two sides of these kinds of memes. She says that, some memes are positively harmful-like chain letters and pyramid selling, new methods of fraud and false doctrines, ineffective slimming diets and dangerous medical ‘cures’” (37). Here, Blackmore is proposing these memes as positively harmful. A meme of chain letters and pyramid selling gives illusion of lots of money to people, but in reality it is an illegal activity which can trap people in bad ways. A meme of false doctrine is also bad for people, because when people go to doctor to evaluate their illness those fake doctors gives false information and makes lots of money. When people go to dietician, they cut down the amount of food per day to get slim body and hot look, but it cannot give enough nutrients to their body so they fell into dangerous health illness. Likewise, a meme of capitalism is also positively harmful for the close relationships among all family members. As Hochschild says, “Capitalism began as a means but became an end in itself, then families and local communities must daily face a competing urgency system and rival conception of time” (189). Meaning, when
