For most of human existence, people have practiced and created art to express their thoughts and their interpretations of the world around them. One of the many art forms we have created along the way is music. For centuries, music was made by a skilled person or group of people playing instruments, whether it be a piano performance or an entire orchestra. In the twentieth-century, however, music began to change. With the help of digital technology, new ways to create music emerged. One of these ways is through a computer using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). There are many benefits to using a DAW for music, but there are also advantages to keeping things acoustic, or without electronics. No acoustic instrument can produce the same sounds as a synthesizer can. On a synthesizer, numerous adjustments can be made to change the shape of the sound, which can allow the same synth to make serve as multiple types of instruments. As an added touch, most synthesizers have sliders and knobs that can modulate their sound to change in the middle of a note, allowing for changes in elements like vibrato or even a change in the oscillator, which is an electronic sound that is used to make the timbre of the notes. A group of well-programed synthesizers can be used to create huge sounds unlike anything acoustic instruments could produce. A great example of this sound is at the time 1:21 in “We’re Not Alone” by Virtual Riot. Both acoustic and digital music have their own unique advantages. Neither one is superior to the other due to the strengths and weaknesses each one carries. Even though electronic music has technically been around for around one hundred years, it will never overtake acoustic music, and vice versa. Plus, nobody is limited to just one or the other. Many artists mix their favorite sides of acoustic and electronic music for their sound. These forms of instruments are just some more tools for artists to play
