In David Zinczenko’s article “Don’t Blame the Eater”, published in the New York Times on November 23, 2002, Zinczenko blames the fast-food industry for causing obesity to increase, by failing to provide calorie information so people can make informed choices and the lack of alternatives for children while their parents are working long hours. Zinczenko argues that with the amount of fast food restaurants that are available to children and the affordable prices, there’s no alternatives other than fast food. His point is that with the amount of fast food restaurants in the country, children fall into the trap easily and end up buying fast food. Zinczenko believes that with the lawsuits against the fast-food industry, the fast-food industry should fix their problems so people can make informed choices about their products and parents will be informed of how much calories their children are eating. In my view, it is the parents who are to be blamed for their children’s obesity, not the fast-food industry. Although many parents work long hours, there are other alternatives besides eating fast food. There are many restaurants or places where you can eat for an affordable price besides fast food chains. Furthermore, food can be prepare in advance so the children can eat it at a later time. You can prepare your own food at home that is healthy. That way, parents know how many calories their children are eating and that they’re eating healthy. Children will also spend less money if they eat homemade food instead of buying fast food.
