All individuals encounter situations in which their lives are forever altered by. No two people react the exact same way to the aftermath of a significant experience for them, and this topic can be explored and interpreted in various different ways using literature. The poem, “David” tells the story of two adventurous mountain climbers who encounter a tragic incident. One from the pair is left looking at his the place he once called home in a horrific, more sinister light. This is not only true for Bobby, the narrator of the poem, however. There have been cases in my life and the life of all others in which no one is the same person they were before.

Since I can remember, I have always been a shy, introverted child and that only progressed through the years. Gullibility and trusting hastily leads to becoming hurt by others and losing confidence in oneself. Unfortunately, this has happened to me and as an effect, I have come to be less trusting of others and myself, as well as more self-conscious because of not only my increasing self-awareness, but because of those who have brought me down constantly. With little help to recuperate from the reoccurring harsh words and actions sent my way by my classmates, my self-esteem deteriorated at an alarming rate and I have never been able to bring myself back up. Similarly to Bobby, something that I had once seen as joyful and sincere, that “something” being people, is now seen by me as everyone being two-faced, untrustworthy, and almost corrupt, even. My personal encounters with certain situations throughout my life have shaped me to be the way I am today, and I will keep changing, as we all do, but this has definitely been the situations that have affected me the most
