Native Americans have endured disease, colonization, and relocation from their homes. Much of their culture was drastically changed due to mission efforts and government intervention which led to massive acculturation. However, to claim that their culture was buried with their ancestors is a rather ignorant accusation. In other words, it was transformed to fit the view of modern society, but remaining in touch with their roots. To better understand this transformation, I have focused to analyze a painting by Oscar Howe (Native American) titled Rider which creates a unique blend of Native American and Western design.…

The act of commenting on written works is not limited to written commentary. In his engraving series Illustrations of the Book of Job, William Blake visually implements his varied interpretations of the Book of Job. He links the story to the greater Christian Biblical canon by adding verses from St. Paul’s Epistles to the Corinthians. In doing so, he condemns the Job’s comforters as blatantly evil rather than mislead. Additionally, he depicts Elihu as an ignored and inessential in order to advance the idea of his worthlessness as a character in the story of Job.…

Does a shark belong in a glass and steel fortified box? Better yet, dead, suspended in formaldehyde, in an art gallery , in a glass and steel fortified box? I ask myself this question while I read Terry Tempest Williams “A Shark in the mind of one contemplating wilderness” I try to comprehend what Damien Hirst is trying to evoke from the eyes and minds viewing his “sculpture” titled “the physical impossibility of death in the mind of someone living” (williams 570). Hirst states “I like ideas of trying to understand the world by taking things out of the world. ”(williams 570).…

Compare the ways in which Plath and Duffy use a range of imagery to express their ideas in Ariel and Mean Time Both poets, Duffy and Plath explore different ideas through the use of imagery. Duffy in poems such as Havisham and Valentine explores contrasting ideas of love, using imagery to show both the lasting effect of heartbreak in Havisham, and the realistic feelings of love and commitment in Valentine. Plath however uses imagery to express the peacefulness and euphoric state found in having a lack of responsibility in Tulips, and in You’re uses imagery to communicate the unconditional love she feels towards her unborn child. Both Duffy and Plath use imagery very differently in Duffy’s Havisham the imagery is used to aid the creation of a distinct persona, whereas Plath uses imagery based on her own personal experience in both Tulips and You’re. In Havisham, the persona of the spinster character Miss Havisham…

Picture books have been around for a long time. They have been read by many generations as a source of pleasure reading and to tap into their imagination. In these books, the writers and illustrator include various language, narrative and visual conventions to appeal to the reader and make them read with a deeper analytical eye to find the intended meaning. While some picture books are simple and the meaning is straightforward others are more complex and metaphorical. An example of such a picture book is Gary Crew and Steven Woolman’s…
Exploring Patterns and Molds as a Creative Person Most readers would argue that the conflict in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story “The Yellow Wallpaper” is created by the incorrect diagnosis and cure for the narrator’s nervous depression. A surface understanding of the story might suggest that the conflict comes from the physical state of being that the narrator finds herself in- she is often overly weary. However, when taking a closer look at the time period and the implications in the text into account you will discover that the cause of her depression is not caused by her fantasies and her sensitive mind. I believe that the underlying cause of her depression stems from the fact that she cannot express herself as a creative person due to the…
It was a cold, windy night when John, Susie, Billy and Pepaw were sitting around the campfire, when pepaw began to tell a story from his childhood. “We’re all a bunch of creatives that don’t know how to work linearly,” Bailey Sorensen responds after being asked a common stereotype of those who comprise her career field, graphic design. This perception of graphic designers seems to be an ongoing theme among global citizens which can be attested to after having scoped the World Wide Web for confirmation. People seem to think that those who are artistically-inclined simply are “spastic” or that they cannot keep their train of thought constant. The same individuals who stereotype graphic designers, and artists in general, to be all over with their ideas also categorize graphic designers to be partially lazy and/or unable to complete a project, which is the complete opposite typically. Even…
