David Pelzer's Life

Improved Essays
Introduction
David Pelzer was born on December 29, 1960. He is the son of Stephen Joseph Pelzer and Catherine Roerva Pelzer and is the second of 5 boys. Both of his parents were alcoholics and eventually separated.
Personal Life Experiences
David was raised mostly by his mother. At a young age, she began beating, starving and torturing him. Throughout his life, his mother broke his arm, burned him on the stove, made him drink ammonia and stabbed him. He went from sleeping under the table beside the litter box to sleeping in the garage on a cot. She would often “forget” to feed him. At one point while his father was away, she starved him for ten days. She would make him eat his regurgitated food for simply finding a way to eat. One of her other punishments were making him have cold baths and make him sit in there for hours. Her favourite punishment, was to put him in the bathroom, where she had put a bucket, with a mixture of Clorox and ammonia and closed the door. He called this “the gas chamber game”. It was the one he hated the most. At the age of 12 he was finally rescued from his mother and placed into foster care. While he was in foster care, he was relocated several times and then at the age of 18, he enlisted himself in the U.S. Air Force.

Both of his parents were alcoholics and they eventually separated. They have also both now passed away. David is the second of five boys. His brother Richard, also writes about the abuse in his own memoir, A Brother’s Journey. In the book A Child Called “it”, by Dave Pelzer, the person I like least in this book, other than the abusive Catherine is Dave's dad, Stephen. From the beginning it was very clear that Dave's rolemodel was his father, Stephen. Stephen was a hardworking fireman, who loved his family. In the beginning of Dave's abuse story, Catherine would not abuse him in front of his father, so the times that Stephen was home Dave would follow him around as protection. “ Whenever he went to the garage to work on a project, I followed him.…

After reading the essays and having discussions in class, my favorite essay was “A Plague of Tics” by David Sedaris. In the excerpt, Sedaris uses a witty tone when writing about his obsessive-compulsive and anxiety disorders because his disability often makes people uncomfortable. Sedaris takes the audience through a series of examples of his obsessive compulsive behavior and the reactions of his teachers, family, and friends as they tried to deal with it. Sedaris, a satirist, chose humor to talk about his disorder. This approach almost makes the severe reactions of the adults to David’s condition seem less critical.…

King David was anointed at a young age by God to become the ruler of Israel. However King David was still subjected to physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development through his entire life-span just like all of us. He may have been labeled the “man after God’s heart”, but like us, he was not without his flaws, most of which were related to his need for continued maturation in his development as well as within his faith walk with God. During David’s adolescents his physique was depicted as, “…ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features, (1 Samuel 16:12, New International Version [NIV]).…
