David Pellegrini The Play Essay

I believe that David Pellegrini’s directorial concept for Pornography was to showcase how closely our everyday lives are intermingle with our nation and how, in these case, a moment of tragedy can bring us together and open our eyes about our environment. Due to the given circumstances of the play there isn’t much room to play around and image the plot in a different time period, but, Pellegrini used all of the open-ended aspects of the play to his advantage and gave them his unique touch to create a coherent story line that related closely to the themes that he wanted to portray. The set was really helpful to the audience to remind us of each of the character’s stories. Most of the characters, if not all of them, had no names, but each had a certain specific area on stage that they always came back to and it made it easy to recognize them. The two characters that didn’t have any certain areas where the most chaotic ones, the high school boy with an obsession for his teacher and the traveler with the dark secret, and I thought that by having them constantly moving around on stage it showed how their minds were constantly working. I heard about the incestuous brother and sister before I went to see the show, but I was still surprised to see their interactions on stage, and it’s not like they were overly sexual with each other but the slightest things or words just triggered that reaction in the audience where everybody cringed a little. It was a great way to show that simple is always better.
