Using my eleven years of classroom teaching as a baseline, I can easily place David in the top 5% of students that I have taught. Since 8th grade, David has consistently demonstrated maturity and academic excellence. David was the student who relished the opportunity to perform in the 8th grade play and had all of his lines memorized by the second week of practice. When other actors needed help with a line he would unobtrusively assist them. When I offered feedback on his acting, he immediately made the necessary adjustments. His efforts resulted in the best onstage performance I had seen in three years of directing. David’s in-depth knowledge of world history and United States history enabled him to be the first Mountainview student to receive a 4, or higher, on both Advanced Placement (AP) exams in these subjects. What makes this especially significant is the fact that we don’t even offer an AP class for world history. He supplemented the textbook from our standard 10th grade world history course with his own study materials. Most 10th grade students are not gifted enough to study college level subject matter independently. David accomplished the same feat in United States history by studying independently for that
