Is David Neelman a manager or a leader?
Having discussed the similarities and distinctions between leadership and management, and having read the article in the book by Nahavani (2015) entitled “David Neelman Reinvents Airlines”, here is my opinion.
I believe that Mr. David Neelman, is a leader, as he best meets the definition and characteristics of a leader.
In terms of realization of the mission, Mr. David Neelman created a vision and strategy.

David Neelman envisioned a future of what an airline should be. His passion for the customer and high-quality service became the vision of JetBlue as well as Azul.
• JetBlue vision: Bring humanity back to air travel.
• Azul vision: Be the best place to work for and to be the best airline that provides the best flight for the customers.
He brings his passion to all the companies he founded and creates a clear and inspiring vision that provides direction and inspires people towards that vision.
Become a role model
Mr. Neelman is a role model for all the crewmembers. His crewmembers base their actions on what he considers acceptable and what are not. They take their cues from him, believing and practicing the same values that he lives by.
His attention to his crewmembers makes them more attentive to their customers. He stops by the call center at Azul regularly, talks to the trainees and reminds his executives to do the same. His consistent interaction with his crewmembers and customers to listen and get feedback became the standard followed by the top executives and managers. His willingness to accept responsibility set the tone for others to do the same. His followers look up to him as their role model.
