“David” one of the most famous sculptures of all time was created in the early 1500s by the famous Italian artist Michelangelo. This statue made out of marble is of a nude male and measures 17ft tall, is a representation of the biblical hero David, known as the “giant slayer” (Goliath). However the expression on the face of the statue is that of a younger David tensed and ready for battle rather than a face of defeat and victory over the giant. Michelangelo was not the original artist to work on this sculpture; in fact Michelangelo was not even born when the first artist was commissioned. At the age of 26 yrs, Michelangelo takes a trip to Florence to inspect the block. Totally uninhibited by the blocks dimensions, he had developed a technique based on the integrity of the single block, takes the measurements and conceives the image of David within that is within the block. In as much of his success as a sculptor in Bologna Rome, he was not proven to be so in the city of Florence. He was not considered but due to his brilliance in selling himself he was given the job. Before Michelangelo became as we know today one of the world’s greatest artist, it was not a profession to be proud of according to his family. As a matter of fact when he expressed his feelings on what he wanted to do in life he was beaten by his father who was the Mayor of the village they lived in. However despite of his family’s feelings Michelangelo set out to perfect his skill. One of his skills that helped him with the development of David is his mastery of anatomy and composition. Michelangelo studied corpses and had an analytical way of seeing. He formed the sculpture into three parts skeleton, muscle and skin which gave the sculpture its shape. Michelangelo begin working in 1501 and it him 2 ½ years to complete and he did this by working day and night sometimes forgetting to eat and using 3
