David Marcum: Poem Analysis

Superior Essays
In a terrific analogy David Marcum compares the systems of the ego to those of the human body, “To keep our body healthy, our immune system creates molecules called free radicals that fight viruses and bacteria. However, when environmental factors such as pollution and pesticides cause free radical production to become excessive, the molecules attack not only the viruses and bacteria but good cells and vital tissues as well, causing illness, premature aging, cancer and other diseases. Ego is a free radical.” (Page 9) The analogy that he draws being that it is not ego, but ego in surfeit that leads to negative externalities within a business. Ego, when managed is a powerful resource not to be extinguished but to be nurtured and maintained. …show more content…
The second sign is defensiveness, which makes you unable to listen to other people’s suggestions because you’re too focused on your own. Just as stated in “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop, “the art of losing isn’t hard to master.” However, as revealed at the end of the poem, it can seem easy to have a loss not bother an individual, but when one stops lying to themselves and let the loss hit them, there is a sense of sadness due to the realization of what is really lost. Something lost does not have to be always be a person or place, it can be miniscule as a cello. That miniscule object can seem like nothing of importance to another individual, yet to that individual who lost it, it can mean everything to them. That miniscule loss of a cello is my most taunting loss.…

Ego is defined as the opinion we have of ourselves. Sometimes the way we view ourselves is different from how we actually are. In A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia, an angel changes through time from an old man who was tormented by the townspeople. Here we see that the torture the man went through did not affect who he was as a person. On the other hand, in Alice Walker’s Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self, a young girl changes the way she views herself based on what she thought people were thinking.…

Fade This One to Black Black shrouds of darkness, as black as the night, black shadows dancing - across the night sky. By the light of the moon, with wings outstretched, bats playing in the shadows. Shades of gray, fading away, turning into inky blackness - a void of despair. Clutches at a broken heart, when love fades into darkness, not even the light of a glowing candle - can take away the gloom.…

Final Assessment & Mission Statement It should be made known that, prior to participating in this course, I was not even aware of what the Benedictine Hallmarks were. Although I lack a definitive religious perspective, I find that the Hallmarks provide a standard guideline for leading a good and productive life. Also, they demonstrate the standard by which we should respect and value our fellow man. In reflecting upon the different Hallmarks we have studied in this course, I would have to count Humility and Hospitality as those that resonate the most with me at my current stage in life.…

Introduction To Poetry Paragraph “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins is a poem that advises readers how to approach and analyze a poem. In the first stanza of the poem, “I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a colour slide,” there is a perception of who the speaker and the audience might be. The speaker of this poem is Collins or perhaps a teacher speaking to an audience (readers or students) that’s indicated by “them”. A simile in this stanza is used to compare a poem to a colour slide; the colour slide is just a picture. Both a poem and picture is considered art that is observed.…
