Courage, the ability to do something that frightens many people, that defines the Logans. Every member of the Logans in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is courageous and always persevere. David Logan is a man who set his own cotton on fire to save a child whose choices lead to his demise. He sent a man he barely knew live with his family, that takes courage. Cassie Logan thoughtfully beat up her arch enemy Lillian Jean and brought back important information to her family on TJ. Mama Logan started a protest on the Wallace Store and glued books together in protest of its chart on book ownership. The Logans courage helped them through times of racism and prejudice. David Logan used his wit and brain to outsmart the Wallace’s on the night of TJ’s taking. He saved all of them from being lynched and killed. By setting the fire he had to sacrifice parts of his land. With Mama out of work and running out of mortgage money the cotton seemed to be the only plus in their money making ways. As Papa was not down in Louisiana working for money, the cotton farm was their only option. Him burning parts gave them less profit of the cotton, meaning less money. With money getting tighter by the minute the Logans were out of options. Papa’s courage lead him to make the strong decision to set a distraction. He was being selfless, the text says, “Papa found a way, as Mama had asked, to make Mr. Granger stop the hanging: He started the fire.” (Taylor, 273). He gave up precious cotton land to save TJ and the Averys. That decision was very courageous as he chose to make a family sacrifice. In the heat of the moment he needed to keep his composure and make the right decision. Papa used a well thought out plan to get out of trouble.
