An “American Dream”
According to an article in the USA Today, “Leading Fitzgerald scholar James L. W. West III calls The Great Gatsby ‘a national scripture. It embodies the American spirit, the American will to reinvent oneself.’ Gaz, the nobody from nowhere reinvents himself as Jay Gatsby born in a rich family, and becomes to be wealthy by his hardworking. 'It 's the Great American Dream, ' says Jeff Nilsson, historian for the bimonthly The Saturday Evening Post, ‘Americans pay a great price for that dream’.The American dream is tempting while it costs much for people to realize it. “Cody chooses Ella, Myrtle chooses Tom, Wilson chooses the false evidence, and Gatsby chooses Daisy, thus, they all choose death”. (James Nagel) While Daisy is also a dead for her conscience is sold to money and status. Gatsby makes Daisy reconsider the decisions she’s made in her life. She remembers the time when she was still a young girl and the love she had for Gatsby, but life cannot goes back. She is no longer the young girl who believes in love. Wilson is the visible murderer of Gatsby’s death, while the invisible murderers are Tom and Daisy. “They cheated the world and make Gatsby into the trap. Though Gatsby is shot by Wilson at last, Wilson isn’t responsible for his death”. (David , Michael Noer) Tom and Daisy’s brutality, Myrtle’s blind and innocent love for Tom, and the mistakes he himself makes all lead the death to him. Due to Daisy’s involvement with him, he lost his direction of life and transits his focus to the love. And due to Daisy’s cruelness, he lost his life for the accident not caused by him. Tom represents the wealthy men with high social status, and with the existence of people like him, Gatsby can never get Daisy and live a happy life. “But Gatsby’s death also lies in himself, for his innocence and blind love hurt himself and destroyed his life”. (James Nagel). Young and talented, leaving his hometown in the west to pursue his dream of wealth and success in the east, Nick takes dream of building cause with him. He is hopeful about his life at first. When he meets the millionare neighbor Gatsby for the first time he is still happy and naive. But after his witness to the relationships between his married cousin Daisy and Gatsby and Gatsby’s death, he becomes to hate the city and he is eager to go back home. “He looks at people differently especially after Gatsby’s death. The most honest person in the story is Nick and that is what himself says.”(F. Scott Fitzgerald). According to his experience in Long island and New York City, his words are believable. The love between Jordan and him is also fragile, and the lies made by Jordan enables him to feel less trusting in people. His dream is collapsed in the end. Gatsby follows Franklin’s schedule at a young age, and to realize his dream of being successful, he keeps working hard. "It is the story that if you work hard enough, you can succeed." (Deirdre Donahue).But the society is realistic, he cannot overcome the social status gap between Tom and him. Nick and Gatsby do have dream, and they try their best to achieve their dreams.
