David Hume was an outstanding philosopher historian, economist, and essayist from Scotland. He was an important figure in the Scottish enlightenment, and, along with John Locke and George Berkeley, one of the three main figureheads of the influential British Empiricism movement. He was born on 26 April 1711 and died on the 25 August, 1776, at the age of 65 either due to bowel or liver cancer. Hume was a fierce opponent of the rationalism of Descartes, as well as an atheist and a skeptic.

During the Medieval times the common belief was that god is the ultimate power, however, Hume opposed this idea completely by stating that the presence of evil suggests that god is either all-powerful but not completely good or he is well-meaning but unable to destroy evil, and so not all powerful. Yes, Hume’s work influenced the society at the time, since he was blamed with heresy, his argument against the church was that being an atheist, he was outside of church’s jurisdiction, nonetheless, the reaction of the church towards Hume’s work was that of people who saw his work as a complete threat towards holding their powers over the congregations. The point Hume made was the ease with which many are governed by only a few, as mentioned above. Hume calls “the faithful” the “the fearful” since all the followers are scared of being burnt till eternity in hell.
