Media of all types has always been a dynamic force that shapes how people think, what they believe and how they see the world. We are confronted with many different forms of media throughout a normal day. Visual media, as in pictures and graphics, is extremely productive in appealing to our senses. A popular kind of visual media is the political cartoon. These cartoons are usually illustrations that poke at issues and public figures in society. The people and topics that are being mocked depends on the cartoonist’s opinions and ideology. It comes from a specific point of view, either politically or morally. He has published material in newspapers all over the country. One of his political cartoons shows a woman sitting at a bar, between two giant men blowing cigar smoke in her face. She seems tiny compared to the monstrous men that represent China and the US, as displayed on pins on their suit jackets. They are both proudly representing their country’s flag on their ties. Seeing the men with nice suits, smoking cigars shows that the two countries are extremely wealthy, while the woman seems modest and normal. Martinis are in front of the men while the woman, with “Mother Nature” written on her shirt, drinks water. Above them, “greenhouse gases” is written in a large cloud of smoke. At the bottom, a quote from Mother Nature reads “DID YOU GUYS (COUGH! COUGH!) NOT SEE THE NO SMOKING SIGN OR DO YOU (HACK!) The plummeting health of reefs occurring from the acidity imbalance is also harming other ocean species, including fish and mammals.
