Throughout the movie you will see how Fletcher verbally and mentally abuses Neiman, all in the name that he will not succeed if its not for this abrasive parenting style. Neiman practiced long hours and thinks about music day; night. His only focus at this point is to win Fletchers approval. He breaks up with his girlfriend, cuts off from the world, and overall becomes an unhappy person filled with fear and hatred towards the man who got him here, Fletcher. One prominent scene where you can see that he is truly doing this all because he cares about how Fletcher sees him, takes place towards the middle of the movie. The scene starts with Neiman taking a bag of ice and he quickly dumps it in a sink. Next he turns on the faucet. The ice melting somewhat and combining with the water. He then quickly fills the water jug with the cool concoction. He begins to drum speeding up and up. With sweat dripping down his face. His whole bodymoving with movement of his hands. His lip is quivering up, with his teeth on them to hold on the pain. As he continues to get faster and faster he reaches his point where he wants to go faster, but his body won't allow it. He's stuck in this stage. He continues on to punch the living daylights out of his drum set, cursing at the world. Now with his bloody hand he releases it into the water and ice bath that he had created, slowly letting it rest there. His blood displacing and combining with the ice water.
