The purpose of this work is to educate young children about why it is important to preserve Australia’s native flora and fauna, why it is in danger, and what they themselves can do at home to help the preservation. The project is planned to accompany National Bilby Day, which is held annually on the second Sunday of September, to honour one of Australia’s most endangered animals (Save the Bilby Fund, 2016). Bilbies were …show more content…
Predation, mostly by introduced foxes and feral cats, resulted in Bilby populations now only occurring in the isolated arid and semi-arid areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland (Save The Bilby Fund, 2016). It has disappeared from 80% of its previous range (Save the Bilby Fund, 2016). The purpose of this project is to educate children about the decline of the Bilby, and the danger that feral cats pose to the species, as well as how to protect other native animals and plants. Not only does the project aim to educate children, but hopefully the parents as well. Children need adults to become much more concerned and involved with environmental education, including their own personal and community decisions about future sustainability (Davis, 1998). The participants in this project are children from ages three to ten years old. These children will …show more content…
The stage is backed by a large pond, and features a pond on the stage as well. This means that there will be no need for a set. The other key players in this project are the wildlife park staff, who have asked the team to be there and to put on this performance and therefore are wanting a good and educational theatre experience, but are also there to help the children be immersed in the project. The team will need to consider the language that is used on the project. The target audience is small children and therefore the language has to be appropriate, and could possibly vary from audience to audience depending on how old the majority of the audience is. The team will also need to consider the facts that they are stating in the project, making sure they are factually accurate. Drama is appropriate to use in this setting as Theatre in Education employs a metataxis of feeling and reflection to facilitate change within the minds of children and to help them make sense of the world (Wooster, 2007). By using this, children are able to get involved in the protection of wildlife. As well as this, currently there is an immediate need to find effective method for promoting environmental education, because it seems the facts of environmental reports alone do not cause people to change their ways (Schonmann, 2011). This project allows for drama to be used as a method for
