David Fincher

A film director is responsible for all aspects artistically and technically during his or her production. Directors may write the films script themselves or be commissioned to write it from the start, or they may be hired after an early draft of the script has been completed. During the pre-production directors are also responsible for selecting the right cast, crew and locations for the film to be placed in. They also direct the rehearsals and the performances of the actors once the film is in production. They also manage the technical aspects of filming including the camera, sound, lighting, design, and the special effects departments. During post production, directors work closely with the editors throughout the processes of editing, to …show more content…
Fincher made his name with dark and stylized thrillers such as “Seven and Fight Club”. His feature debut was Alien 3 (1992), which did not go smoothly. The production company did not allow Fincher to have complete control over the film, and the end product did not turn out as he expected. The experience was enough to convince him to go back to directing music videos and commercials for the next few years. He agreed to give another feature film a chance, and this time he had complete control over the entire process. The result was in 1995 “Seven”, which had an edgy style unlike anything else seen before and was a hit among a certain demographic. His next film “Fight Club” was even more controversial than “Seven”. Critics and audience simply didn’t understand it at first, and as a result, it suffered bad reviews and poor box office turnout. It later becomes a cult hit on DVD/VHS and since then many critics have changed their mind. He has also made “Panic Room”, in 2002, in 2007 he then made “Zodiac”, in 2008, “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, 2010, “The Social Network”,2012 he then directed “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and recently in 2014 “Gone Girl”. I am interested in his work because David Fincher cares about information for example drama only happens in his films when a character finds out new information. I am also interested in the fact that he gives himself restrictions on his own films for example he only uses close ups if it is important information that the audience needs to know, he doesn’t move the camera unless he feels like it is necessary, he also rarely uses hand-held and the camera has to come across as not human

Auteur theory is the theory of filmmaking in which the director is regarded as the key creative force in a film. Dubbed by American film critic Andrew Sarris in France during the late 1940’s, auteur theory was an outgrowth of the cinematic theories of Andre Bazin and Alexandre Astruc. This theory states that the director, who oversees all visual and audio elements of a film, is considered somewhat of an ‘author’ of a film more so than the writer of the screenplay. This means that visual elements such as blocking lighting, camera placement and angles as well as scene length deliver the message of the film, rather than the plot. To qualify as an auteur, a director must showcase technical competence, personal style, and interior meaning.…

The creative process, underlying all parts of the artistic career of Baz Luhrmann, worldly renowned Australian director, has roots in various creative theories, but can be found most similar to the one recognized by the theorist and artist David Usher. For the last two decades, the few works produced by Baz Luhrmann have shocked and at the same time captured audiences with their pure, different and untypical view of the cinema (from Strictly Ballroom (1992) to Great Gatsby (2013)), therefore raising questions about the processes that the director undertakes in order to achieve this level of creativity (IMDb). In his book Let the Elephants Run: Unlock Your Creativity and Change Everything, David Usher talks about different fundamentals of creative…
