David by Donatello was inspired by the biblical figure, David. The exact date that the piece was created is unknown, but it is believed to be created between 1430- 1460. In the Bible, David defeated the giant Goliath after everyone else in the city had refused. He was only a peasant and fought only in a tunic and his weapon of choice was a slingshot. After he knocked Goliath down, he took his sword and cut Goliath’s head clean off. Although Donatello himself was not religious, he agreed to sculpt this piece for the Medici family.
Cosimo Medici belonged to a very wealthy family that hailed from Florence, Italy. Medici was a close to Donatello himself, and commissioned the piece to be a centerpiece to of an Medici courtyard.
