David Alexander Clarke, better known as Sheriff Clarke, is the 64th Sheriff of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born on August 21, 1956. He is one out of five children from Jeri and David Clarke Sr. Sheriff Clarke. He has been a resident in the City of Milwaukee ever since he was a little boy. Sheriff Clarke is a graduate from Marquette University High School. He was a member of the varsity basketball team. They won the state championship of private schools in 1973. Nine months after being promoted he was selected for a Specialized Homicide Division. When he joined he was part of a team that investigated more than 400 homicide cases in a four year period. “ Milwaukee police Department (MPD) made arrest in more than 80% of homicides, well above the nation’s 60%,” (Milwaukee, 2016). In the year of 1992 Sheriff Clarke was promoted to a lieutenant of detective.
After David was promoted to Lieutenant of Detectives he was assigned to a Criminal Investigation Bureau as a Shift Commander of Crime Against Property Division, the Violent crimes unit and again the Homicide Division. In the year of 1996 David Clarke was again promoted to MPD’s Command Staff as a Captain of police. Soon after he became the commander of the Department’s First district located in Milwaukee's downtown business center. It was funded by the National Sheriff Association and the National Institute of Corrections in Colorado. Soon after Sheriff Clarke went back to attend Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy in April 2005 to complete a week long executive program. The title of the program was “Driving government Performance: Leadership Strategies the produce results”,(Milwaukee, 2016).Sheriff Clarke was nominated in 2005 to be in the FBI 28th Annual National Executive Institute. In 2009 Sheriff Clarke was able to meet with Police Chief
