David Chalmers Summary

Decent Essays
I will have to say this chapter is my favorite so far. There is one video that caught my attention, it was the video of David Chalmers claims that zombies live among us. It is not like the ones we see on TV or the Haitian zombies. Chalmers theory seems a little far fetch but I will have to say that I agree with him.
I agree with Chalmers claim that physically we exists but we still be lacking consciousness of some sort. He is saying that the world is full of unconscious human beings. They are living their lives but have no conscious of it. There are many times I am going to school and when I get there I cannot remember if I ran a red light. When you do the same routine over and over; it became a habit and I am able to do it unconscious.

This belief in philosophy that the mind, soul, or conscious is independent from the body is referred to as Cartesian dualism; in other words, if the body dies the mind does not. Trying to distinct the mind from the body has been a topic in philosophy since Rene Descartes, one of the most influential founders. In one of Descartes first essays, the ‘Second Meditation: Of the Human Mind’, he wrote about how he believed that the mind and the body were two separate entities and self is distinct from the body. On the other hand, there are plenty of respected philosophers that believe Descartes’s look on our mind and body is wrong; these people call themselves Anti-Cartesians. Sir Peter Strawson, a very well-known Anti-Cartesian stated, the mind is…

Chapter 3 demonstrates Searle’s critical abilities towards Dualism and Materialism, as well as the responses to these arguments by materialists. The opinions include: the prospect of zombification and famous analogies “What Is It like to Be a Bat’, “What Mary Didn’t know” and “the Chinese room” by Nagel, Jackson and Searle himself. In Chapters 4 and 5, Searle’s twofold description of consciousness include its configuration and causal link to our physical bodies as well as the outside world. These influence readers to conclude that if a spectrum of ideas ranging from an immortal spirit to artificial intelligence cannot offer an explanation to the mind body problem where do we go from there? Luckily, Searle provides a solution with “biological…

Thesis Statement Most of our actions are governed by non-conscious parts of the brain, giving logical reasoning a very limited and ineffective authority over how we decide and what we do. The sub-conscious, or the unconscious always has a stronger control over the self, and trying to resist its authority would only lead to frustration and disillusionment. In Shakespeare’s iconic character Hamlet, this dilemma between the reasoning of the conscious and the overriding intuitive powers of the unconscious can be observed as Hamlet’s trying to make sense of every step he takes only makes him less decisive and brings him unhappiness. Research Questions Why does Hamlet struggle so much in making decisions and taking steps? What keeps him from acting out his revenge?…

Gore’s argument in his book, The Assault on Reason, informs readers about the way fear encourages illogical thinking. Gore varies greatly between different methods of persuasion, including appeals to emotion (pathos) and credibility (ethos). He utilizes these many techniques to bring out the relationship between politics and fear, however, a specific element overshadows the others. The extensive application of expertise, a form of ethos, lends itself to Gore’s statements about how fear affects people’s rationality. The significance of expertise lies in the knowledge and deep research that can account for a wide variety of the ideas that Gore mentions throughout his argument.…
