Surrey International Children’s Festival, Storytelling by David Bouchard
Although I had been studying French for over a decade, this was my very first French cultural event I have ever been to in the Lower Mainland. Living and studying Core French in BC did not give me much exposure to French Culture. Unless I intentionally choose to listen to FM 97.7, La Radio-Canada, the only French station in BC, I perceived difficulties in finding the French and Francophile community in Vancouver. However, when I was young, I have lived in Montreal for about two and half years and I had a privilege of being exposed to French cultural events such as the Du Maurier Festival de Jazz in Montreal and a day trip to La Cabane a Sucre in Mont-Saint-Gregoire.

Despite the complexity of the language, I found French very attractive and had a strong desire to improve my language skills. However, lest my lack of confidence, I kept myself away from being involved in French community.
My experience being in French cultural event at Surrey International Children’s Festival was quite interesting. It was my first time being exposed to the Metis culture. The mixture of the Aboriginal culture and French culture definitely was one of kind. Although David Bouchard somewhat sounded like Quebecois, he also used words that I have never heard before and he explained it how his family use their own language to express certain things in life. He even told us how fascinated people become when he talks due to these

The importance of the Algonquian native american tribe in the Eastern Great Lakes Region is essential in understanding the region’s political reasoning, this can be understood in the article The Significance of Algonquian Kinship Networks in the Eastern Great Lakes Region, 1600-1701 by Heidi Bohaker, a professor who resides at University of Toronto . The purpose of this comes from an event that occurred in the summer of 1701, author states “the twelve hundred French residents of Montreal played host to some thirteen hundred Native American visitors…” (Bohaker,pg.23) The reasoning behind this was to create a peace treaty, to end conflict with the Iroquois Confederacy. This event is important to remember because the Algonquins were one of many North American native tribes to have the French as allies.…

It is said that Quebec self-identifies as a distinct society and as a result, it is often referred to as a nation within a nation. As a region, it has been at the centre of political controversy long before it became an official Canadian province. This distinction stems from Quebec’s history and its roots as Canada’s French-Canadian cultural hub. Unlike most provinces that are made up of multiple regional identities, Quebec is often considered an anomaly where provincial borders align with regional boards. Though this label cannot be equally applied to all aspects of Quebec life, or to the population as a whole, the scholarship that surrounds the province is often telling.…

“Me Talk Pretty One Day” This essay written about Mr. David Sedaris talks about David’s past where he tells us about the problems he experienced when he studied French in Paris. After his vacation, David moved to Paris with hopes of learning the language. When he got there, he realized that it wasn’t as easy as he thought. In my opinion, the point of this essay is to explain to the reader’s that, even though speaking a different language is somewhat difficult, always remember it takes time to learn the ability to speak effectively. Putting in hard work and dedication will help you advance the skills that you need to succeed.…

Boudicca was born in 30AD and she became the Celtic queen after her marriage to King Prasutagus. Boudicca is predominantly known for leading an unsuccessful rebellion against the Roman Empire which led to her subsequent death in 60AD. The interpretation of Boudicca has changed over centuries. Through the ancient Roman historians, Publius Cornelius Tacitus and Dio Cassius, Boudicca is depicted as tyrannical and a dictator whereas modern historians Reid Struan and Richard Hingley, Christina Unwin she is referred to as a heroic figure and a powerful female leader thus reinforcing the idea of the ever-changing nature of the depictions of Boudicca throughout time. David Sedaris' goal in writing, Me Talk Pretty One Day, is to take the reader on a journey through a challenging time in his life through which he ultimately persevered. I was able to determine, through a deeper, more analytical reading that the author's reference to his age and location emphasize the difficulties he would face. The author sets the tone for what appears to be an impossible situation. He is well past prime school age, he is in a foreign country surrounded by younger individuals who, like him, do not speak the language and yet they differ in that he cannot relate to them due to the age gap. Mr. Sedaris uses multiple negative connotations, some subtle and some overt, to describe both the environment within the school and outside of it.…

Comparing and Contrasting Giddens and Bourdieu Anthony Giddens and Pierre Bourdieu both focused their social theories on proving the same phenomenon. The central focus of their studies was related to the relationship between structure and agency. Previous classical theorists stated that both structure and agency were two different concepts that existed in opposition to each other. However, Giddens and Bourdieu set out their theories to prove that both structure and agency are separate concepts but, at the same time, they are dialectical in nature. Both contemporary theorists developed a unique theoretical framework that overcame the original sentiment of structure and agency existing in opposition to one another.…
