Although I had been studying French for over a decade, this was my very first French cultural event I have ever been to in the Lower Mainland. Living and studying Core French in BC did not give me much exposure to French Culture. Unless I intentionally choose to listen to FM 97.7, La Radio-Canada, the only French station in BC, I perceived difficulties in finding the French and Francophile community in Vancouver. However, when I was young, I have lived in Montreal for about two and half years and I had a privilege of being exposed to French cultural events such as the Du Maurier Festival de Jazz in Montreal and a day trip to La Cabane a Sucre in Mont-Saint-Gregoire. …show more content…
Despite the complexity of the language, I found French very attractive and had a strong desire to improve my language skills. However, lest my lack of confidence, I kept myself away from being involved in French community.
My experience being in French cultural event at Surrey International Children’s Festival was quite interesting. It was my first time being exposed to the Metis culture. The mixture of the Aboriginal culture and French culture definitely was one of kind. Although David Bouchard somewhat sounded like Quebecois, he also used words that I have never heard before and he explained it how his family use their own language to express certain things in life.
