In the article “Male Fixations” by: David Barry the author states that some men regard themselves as mechanics, and that every man has the instinct to behave they are in control of any situation. Having men be portrayed this way has brought women to believe that for men to be considered as real men they have to know how to fix any kind of stuff. If they couldn’t do this, they would not be real men. In my experience I am the kind of person who does not have the ability to repair things well. I try my best to fix the problem, but I end up not repairing it well. I feel that me not being able to fix things does not make me any less of a man than what I am. I see the situation as being prejudice I feel that there are other ways of showing one's manhood. For example when man gives he's word, and when he shows respect. For example when a man makes a promise, he keeps it. A real man would rather die than breaking his word. Another example is a real man respect himself, and others at all times, unless,of course he is being disrespected. Respect is a reason of ones true values, all people should respect each other. Respect is a basic moral value or need which makes us aware that we are human beings, and not wild animals. That is what separates us from them, because human beings know how to act, and monkey’s don't they base their actions on what they feel like. Having known this moral value it is important for a man,and woman sets an example for others to take upon that way they can pass it on to others. Coming back to the issue the author brings up on how not all men have the innate ability to repair things. I feel that every person has the ability to do things well than others that's just part of life.I believe that if you're going to do something make sure to do it right if not don’t do it all. From reading the authors point of view on male fixations,In conclusion have taken upon this summary new perspective of how woman view men in today’s society. The author “believes that this strange stereotype will change one day”.I agree with the author on the fact that the

In the first chapter of the Gender Knot by Allan Johnson, the author describes the patriarchal elements in our society as a degree that upgrades male privilege by being male dominated, male identified, male cantered, and obsessed with control. Even though patriarchy is a type of society in which both men and women participate in, according to the author. First, Johnson defines male dominance as a position of authority and power that creates differences in power between the two genders. As a result, men claim more tittles, income, and wealth than women. Most of all, male dominance developed the ideology that men are superior by controlling the content of our cultural objects such as television shows, magazines, and internet which unfortunately…

My first point was from the readings of Gail Bederman. Where he talked about men feeling like they had to define caricatures for good and bad masculinity. Where defining cloths, jobs, mannerisms, and gait could be defined as masculine (Bederman 1995). I have had men feel that I am too masculine in how I deal with life. I am not a chick flick women, nor am I a talker, in general or about my feeling, this dose not match what men think a woman should be.…

Domestic violence plays an enormous problem in society, specifically when there is no set explanation to why it occurs. By analyzing the role of hegemonic masculinity, patriarchy, and traditional gender roles as it pertains to domestic violence, this essay intends to expound on how the three interlace to perpetuate the domestic violence cycle. Hegemonic masculinity rose out of the post-World War II era as the idea of the “real man”, and the idea that the real man is not peaceful, nurturing, or indecisive, nor a sissy, crybaby, or loser” (Messner & Greemberg, 2015, p. 10). Rather, the “real man” is a man who is seen as someone who has the speed and strength of an athlete, as having a large income, authority, charm, loyalty for family, manual…

It is simply naïve to disregard the overwhelming influence that the media and literature has had over the public over the past century and more precisely, in our youth. As a society, we constantly twist ourselves to fit the mold presented to us through various media outlets (e.g. TV, movies, magazines, advertisements, etc.) and in literature we encounter in our lives for a multitude of reasons. Throughout time, men have been presented to fit very traditionally masculine traits based on a preconceived narrative as to what it means to be a man and how to present oneself in order to be perceived as manly by others. Media and literature have branded a hyper-masculine image of men that has in time become what is expected for young boys to follow––be it relayed to them or not.…

When it comes to ideals regarding masculinity, society expects a lot from men. Men are supposed to be leaders, powerful, authoritative, dominant, outspoken, and protective. Also, men are not supposed to show any emotions other than anger. It must be difficult having to keep emotions bottled up and it is ridiculous that men should get mad rather than upset. Not all situations require anger; sometimes you just need time to be upset about something.…
