In the poem “Casey at Bat” and the story “David and Goliath,” a comparison of David and Casey shows differences and similarities. The first similarity is that they both have multiple people depending on them. All of the Israelites were depending on David to defeat Goliath so that they could have a fair battle. Casey has his entire team relying on him and not to mention the crowd. In the text it says, “There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.” So Casey had bases loaded and the pressure was on to score a homerun. David and Casey are comparable in other ways too. They were both kind of the underdogs in the story. Nobody thought that they were any good, and nobody had any faith in them. For example, David had a success and Casey did not succeed. David beat Goliath and Casey hit the ball, but either someone caught it or it was a foul ball. So Casey did not succeed and he did not have all of the praise.Casey at the bat it says, “mighty Casey has struck out.” But did he really fail if he tried his hardest. They are different in others ways like the fact that David was instructed to do this all by himself and Casey had teammates to help him. David went out there to Goliath by himself, yes, Casey did walk out to bat by himself, but he had his teammates on bases and in the dugout cheering him on. In David and the Goliath it says, “David took off the armor and picked up his shepherd’s stick. He went out to a stream and picked up five smooth rocks and put them in his leather bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he went straight toward Goliath.” So he went out by himself and prosper. There is another way they diversify. When Casey went up people still cheered for him. They didn’t think that he could do it, but they still cheered hoping he could. When David went up nobody was cheering him on nobody even thought he had a chance to beat Goliath. “And when, responding to the cheers,” is what Casey at the Bat says. So he had people cheering for him. So as you can see there are many ways that Casey and David are alike. There are also many ways they are different. But all in all they show some of the same great
