Gold only shines when it is polished is the theme of Freak the Mighty. Even though Kevin and Max were both seen as freaks of nature, when put together, they could do almost anything. In stories, such as The Iliad by Homer and The Life of Themistocles by Plutarch, two Greek characters were highly recognized as crucial to the Greek victories. In the Iliad, the character Odysseus took a great role in the victories that led to winning the long 10 years Trojan War. In the Life of Themistocles, Plutarch describes how Themistocles also played a large role in the Greek victory in defeating the Persians. These two leaders, in comparison, were both men of intellect. They often used many strategies that consisted of persuasion and trickery.…
Environmental Factors These refer to general situational factors that help keep a group together. An environmental influence is contractual responsibilities such as transfer rules, geographical restrictions or contractual obligations. An example of this in the film “Remember the Titans” is the geographical restriction of living in the town of Virginia. This restricting them to only one option and that is to play for the T.C Williams football team and is emphasised because “...none of [the] boys can afford to go to some other district just to play ball”. Films that are adaptations of novels at times leave out important things that made the novel so special, and in return the film ends up as a poor portrayal of the story. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Scott Fitzgerald devotes a considerable amount of attention to build up the relationship between Nick Carraway and Jordan baker, as well as providing Nick Carraway the ability to have more freedom in the way he expresses his thoughts and feelings. These concepts shift in the scene from the film directed by Baz Luhrmann, as it does not portray the intimate relationship between Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker. The main focus of the film is Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, and because of that, it does not allow for another romance in the story. The film 's restraint of time also damages its ability to express the thoughts and feelings of the characters, specifically Nick Carraway.…

There are many heroes in today’s society. Every person can have a different definition of what defines someone as a hero or something as heroic. Grant Wiggins, a local school teacher in A Lesson Before Dying and Jefferson’s friend, has his own definition of what it means to be a hero. It is arguable that there are two predominant heroic characters in the The Crucible, a drama written by Arthur Miller, and in A Lesson Before Dying, a historical fiction written by Ernest J. Gaines, John Proctor and Jefferson. John Proctor is the protagonist in The Crucible whose town is afflicted by the witch trials in 1692, and Jefferson is a main character in A Lesson Before Dying who is a black man on death row in the 1940s south.…

Traditionally, we think a hero to be someone who is physically strong but over time evolves into someone who is mentally strong. In both The Odyssey by Homer, a story about a great Greek hero and his journey back home to his wife and son, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, a story about a boy who has autism and runs away from home and faces many mental roadblocks along the way, heroic traits are displayed. Both of these books show heroes who emerged and gained strength. Odysseus illustrates incredible physical strength but lacks mental strength.…
