My book for my leadership essay is Dave Ramsey’s EntreLeadership: 20 years of practical business wisdom from the trenches, which was released back in September 2011. This book is about executive business leadership, which Dave calls EntreLeadership. EntreLeadership is his own very clever branding and wordplay mash-up of entrepreneur and leadership, which is his focus for the book. Although that is his primary target audience and demographic he is selling to, I strongly insist that any military leader can learn solid leadership and stewardship principles form the study of his book.

His lessons I am going to go over here is about team building, which is highly relevant in the Army today.
In our WOILE leadership classes, we discussed team building. The students in our class had been on a team where everyone was counterproductively pulling in different directions. We have all been in that kind of misery and mess. The students in our class had been on a team where you felt the team and teamwork was strong. We have all been there too. In his chapter on unity, Dave explains his concept of team building which really drives the point home with the example of Belgian draft horses in EntreLeadership: 20 years of practical business wisdom from the trenches. Just like what we learned as children from our parents and teachers, sometimes the simple things pack the biggest wisdom. My former boss CW4 retired Roy Okano lived by and treated others by these simple principles every day of his life. When I first met him, I was an E4 Specialist and he floored me with his humbleness and genuine caring for all the soldiers he worked with. Whether you worked for him or not, he treated others as he, himself would want to be treated every day. Roy never preached to us, rather he always just lived by these simple leadership principles, which in my mind is still the best way to teach.
As good fortune would have it, I eventually saw a job opening for Chief Okano’s section, which I immediately applied to and was hired for. That was back in 2001, and I have been working there ever since. Working for Roy was a true pleasure, and I rose from the ranks from a E4 to SGT, to SSG, and then to a WOC candidate. I finally made it to the senior Chief slot in that section myself, just like Roy. I often find myself comparing my leadership style to his, and hoping I can measure up to his high standards. Roy’s “Golden Rule” has influenced me, and so I hope to lead exactly the same way now that he is
