Dave Eggers Serve Or Fail

In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility. …show more content…
As a student, I always lacked strong self-efficiency. I would always doubt myself, and would never be certain that I could get anything done, however, this all changed when I got the opportunity to work with my church youth group. We were given a task to build a shelter home in Chetumal, Mexico. Our youth leader told us that we had three weeks to build it, and this made me doubt that we would get it done in time, considering that we only had 18 people. Even with the given circumstances, I still decided to give it a try and work hard. Every day we would get up and work really hard for hours, hoping to get it done. After three weeks, to my surprise, we finished building the church. It was at that moment that I realized that anything was possible. I realized that if you work hard and put in a lot of effort, then you will be able to get the job

In the source, The Community Is Their Textbook: Maryland's Experiment with Mandatory Service for Students, by Suzanne Goldsmith, the question of whether or not community service should be required for graduation is examined. Some raise the concern of it politicizes students, as community service can include protests, petition, making signs, etc. For example, students have positioned for a city to paint notices on storm drains, to prevent people from dumping garbage into them. Although a good cause many are concerned about how far it will go. Another argument, specifically made by a student who is filling a lawsuit in protest of the new requirement, says required community service takes the heart and the fun out of community service, to which…

Serve Or Fail Summary Dave Eggers’ story talks about the benefits of doing public service and the downside of it. As said in his story many students have a little bit too much of free time during their college days, sometimes it goes up to four days, especially with athletes who don't do much but train all four years like Eggers. “In 14 states, a bill was passed that required 90,000 students perform 25 hours of community serves’’ to help out the community and to probably get their asses of their couch. In the story Eggers mainly supports the idea of students working or helping the community because it helps them understand the way of life. Students in colleges should have a part time job and help the community so that they will learn some value lessons.…

It is sought as threatening for youth to go through several years of education and not be able to recognize the bigger picture. Life is more than a grade in schools and definitely more than a score on a test; if high school students are not intrigued in anything outside of the realm of schooling and administrators don’t push them to do so, it could lead to the lose of residents that could have provided substantially to the community. There are times students may not be attached to education at all and may turn to other little achieving paths to occupy time. As a means to avoid both of these synopses, and any other alike, arranging a secure and attracting inception like community service would not only help the youth, but the bigger society…

Since college students are well suited for community service, by doing community services, they can "create...a lifelong commitment to volunteering. " They can also start "addressing the needs of those around them" because by doing that, they can help their community become better than it was before. Although performing community service can be helpful towards the individual themself and to those who live in the community, young people shouldn't be required to perform public services. Young people should not be forced to complete something that they do not want to do. Nobody wants to recieve "community service from someone who is forced to serve" because it does not give a good feeling to what they are doing.…

Some schools, like Wittenberg University, requires the students that attend to perform community service as a graduation requirement. In my opinion, I believe colleges should not be allowed to make community service a graduation requirement. I believe this because if you were a college student who works, where/when would you find the time to perform community service between working, studying and attending classes? Also, if student’s have to perform community service, it may interfere with their work/school schedule. However, when applying for employment, having community service on a resume would look better when an applicant is applying to work for an employer.…

Most students know they need x amount of hours of community service to get the scholarship they want, to get into their top college, or to get into an honor society. But most people don't take into account what service really means or why it matters. When someone decides to make the decision to help someone, they are taking the first step in changing the world. Actions do not go unnoticed, in most cases you will touch the lives of the people you helped. In addition someone may have seen you help someone else and it inspires them to do something good, like a chain reaction.…

I do not agree with this policy. Students that are going through high school have to work hard enough already. They should not have to worry about community service to graduate. Every student spends at 4 years in high school and having them do community service should not decide if they graduate or not. We have other people who can do the community service besides high school kid's.…

I know that it is tempting to think of all students as clay to be molded into one image, but the truth is we are all individuals. We need to be nurtured to follow our own passions, our own strengths, our own paths to greatness. One point of contention I would like to address directly and separately is the idea that community service looks good on a college application. Admissions is not going to see forced community service in the same positive light as volunteer service. I briefly touched on the fact that the very act of volunteering shows many character traits.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
