In Cullen’s novel, it is evident that both the shooters dealt with some sort of mental illness, whether it be depression or something more serious. According to the timeline in Columbine, Eric particularly deals with his mental illness by taking medication and seeing a psychiatrist. (Cullen 372). Mental illness is a chemical imbalance which is obviously not the parents’ fault and the parents’ should not be held responsible.
Parents obviously do have a tremendous impact on the way their children turn out but when it comes to something as serious and tragic as a mass school shooting, the parents should not have to deal with guilt. It’s not as if the parents bought Eric and Dylan the guns or helped them with their plans or even excessively encouraged violence on other human beings. Due to this, it seems horrendous that some would blame the shooters’ parents for the tragedy.
Many people who believe that it’s the parent’s fault would blame the fact that they raised their child wrong or the way the parent is incorrect. I think this viewpoint is dreadfully incorrect because a parent could raise two of their children the exact same way but the two children could both end up completely different.
