Someone is possibly dead or deserted, the shadow symbolising how the person’s presence is still there but untouchable, a silhouette of their existence. When someone was once cared about has been lost, the presence can still be felt. The emptiness left behind relates to the central theme of depression or a stage of grief. Breathing symbolises living, being alive makes you lucky. Smoking can damage lungs and “Breathing through corrupted lungs” refers to seeing things in different ways, after getting a love reality check. The phrase isn't just about having corrupted lungs by smoking, it has a meaning of being heart broken, self destructive and possibly trying to deal with depression, making it hard to continue on living. We get too intimate with all the wrong people and hearts are broken in search of love. We hurt ourselves over and over again because at the end of it all, it’s still exciting. Each wrong and failed relationship is just adding another name to the list of lovers that went wrong. They are young and feel untouchable. This relates back to the word ‘youth’ and being reckless, carefree, experimenting and looking for things to enjoy and have passion

A few months after writing his song “Cinderella”, Steven Curtis Chapman’s youngest daughter was tragically hit by her brother’s SUV when she ran out to meet him upon his arrival home. This devastating event gave a whole new meaning to “Cinderella”, and Chapman poured more emotion into his performance of the song than ever before, using the song as a way to cope with his grief. In David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole, the Corbett family suffers from a similar experience when Becca and Howie’s four-year-old son, Danny, runs out in front of a car and is killed. All of the characters deal with the grief of losing someone so young, and all of them grieve in their own, unique ways. Lindsay-Abaire displays the theme that, while grief is a universal…

As well as protesting the Vietnam War, Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival preached antiestablishment and blue-collar pride. "The song speaks more to the unfairness of class than war itself," Fogerty said. "It's the old saying about rich men making war and poor men having to fight them” (Songfacts). The song has a consistent idea that some Americans aren’t cut out for the war. “The horrors of war were well documented and broadcast-ed on television.…

During high school, I participated in the KYYMCA Youth and Government program. The paramount conference of this program is called the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). This conference serves as a mock session of the Kentucky legislature in which students are able to propose and debate bills. Thus, students become well-versed in debate procedure and, most of all, familiar with the rap of the gavel following the ruling on a bill’s passage. Students will either hear the phrase, “It is the decision of the chair that this bill has been passed, and it has” (rap rap), or “It is the decision of the chair that this bill has failed, and it has” (rap rap).…

The audience can assume the parents are disinterested in their daughter because the girl wore the same dress as the day before. Both lyrics are signs that the parents are uninvolved in the girl’s life. Child abuse is mentioned in verse one when the artist sings, “She hides the bruises with linen and lace” (line 4), while verse three says, “A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate/ When mornin’ comes it’ll be too late” (17-18). The audience concludes that the girl’s bruises are from her parents, and her parents’ abuse threatened her life. The overall story is about a girl who is a victim of abuse, but the artist’s main goal is to raise awareness of child abuse.…

Li-Young Lee’s “A Hymn to Childhood” flashes back to the Cultural Revolution in the People’s Republic of China, which took place from 1966 to 1976. During this time, the Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong was losing influence because of his failed policy, the Great Leap Forward, and so he wanted to reaffirm his power by starting a sociopolitical movement to eliminate his adversaries and other revisionists. Li-Young Lee infuses this past by including himself as the speaker who narrates his childhood. While the speaker recalls his childhood with images of fear, oppression, and pain, he also remembers it as a period of hope and innocence. The first stanza focuses on the theme of fear.…

It is definitely important to remember Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ histories because it helps us understand the hardships they faced as a culture and it can further help us recognise how we can close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people share four main world views; culture, land, place and country and relationships. The world view, relationships, is conveyed many times in each of the literary texts by relating back to certain events that Aboriginal elders faced. Three texts that clearly represent the world view relationships are,; Change the Game, by the Colli Crew; Treaty, by Yothu Yindi and Took the Children Away, by Archie Roach. The Colli Crew’s song, Change the Game, is about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people- mostly describing the people of the past; in the text, it states that they are singing from north Queensland near the border.…

In "Drowning Shadows", Sam Smith shows issues about loneliness, desperation for a company, and hopes of finding love. The song addresses to a specific example of loss of innocence, feeling lost in its own life. Overall, "Drowning Shadows" is a heart-wrenching and poignant song, which is based on the issues of the actual world. The problems are related to youth. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a song originally written and recorded by the Grunge band Nirvana in 1991 on their “Nevermind” album and is considered to be one of the most influential songs the band had written during their time. One year later, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was covered by singer-songwriter Tori Amos for her “Crucify” EP. While the cover may be extremely different from the original, there are still some elements that are similar among both versions. In contrast, both Nirvana and Amos play different styles of music which would change how the song is viewed by their respective audiences. Although the lyrics, in general, are the same, the overall meaning and mood of the song is different based which artist is playing the song.…

If you didn’t know it was written about a child passing away you could interpret it as a breakup or a child growing up and moving out for the first time. It paints a portrait of someone absolutely trying to cope with a loved one not being around anymore. You feel the pain of someone trying to put away constant reminders of a loved one in an effort to heal. I wouldn’t say they are trying to forget about them completely, just moving the physical memories out of sight. The chorus of this song leaves so much open to interpretation that people have linked the lyrics to drug addiction and even chasing a relationship between two friends.…

In times of despair the musical Waitress, music and lyrics written by Sara Bareilles, captures the sadness of true life troubles. The song “She Used To Be Mine” is a great example of that. The main character, Jenna Hunterson, sings this song in sorrow when she has an abusive husband and an unwanted pregnancy. During this song, she is hurt, lost and is trying to find herself again. This is why I decided to translate this piece into a teenager’s perspective with issues teenagers face in today's society as a realization of what some may have to go through.…
